Cute, but loud
My daughter loves this, I just wish the music on it wasn't so loud lol I hear it so many times a day now, but she's happy. We also had a ton of trouble setting up the password, but after 20+ tries it finally worked.

Tons of fun!
My 6 year old granddaughter asked for this and wow, I am so glad I got it for her! She is a very girly-girl meaning she loves princesses and glitter, etc. Plus she has two older sisters so she is getting to the age where she wants to keep her own secrets, too! She definitely was hooked on the "royal" side, but liked the fact that "rebel" was there, too. Hours of fascination with it! One thing, it got kind of noisy as she kept opening and closing it with the toy asking her for her password, sometimes not recognizing her and her continually changing the password. But that doesn't matter for the amount of fun she has with it!

Cool Password Recognition
This book is very colorful and comes with a key, note books and pen. There are two sides of the book which needs two separate passwords. If you forget the password there is a reset button on the back. Password recognition makes it so special.

Overpriced, batteries needed
This is not worth $30, more of a $15 or possibly $20 item. You cannot open it without batteries, unless you just want to rip open the Royals side, because the Rebel's is IMPOSSIBLE without batteries (batteries are NOT included). I like the little notes pages and "gate" that contains the extremely thin "notebook" (this is not even a thick enough to be considered a notebook, and this does not have a lock on it!) that is on both sides. The detail on the outside of this diary is amazing, and one of my favorite parts is that if you purchase the Ever After High Best Friends "Forever" After necklace set, which unfortunately is also super overpriced, the key fits in the padlock! Also, do not use the voice lock security, that only works in movies, and even then it doesn't work. So, in conclusion, consider it this; an overpriced heavy "diary" with almost no paper. That sums it up.

Really cute and well made, but the volume is loud, really loud.
My daughter loves this. It is cute and the key is always fun for kids. Thankfully, if you misplace the key, it is easily opened by pretty much any slim object (household key, butter knife). The two sections inside is clever and the theme is very appealing to my 7yo daughter. I have only one issue, the volume on this thing is outrageously loud. Even my daughter was happy when I put electrical tape over the speaker vent. The song is a bit of an earworm that you will be stuck with, but if the kid is happy...It was one of her Christmas gifts and still gets regular use, I'd have to say it was one of the favorites this year.

My Daughter loves it!
After reading the reviews regarding the difficulties with the voice passwords, I was a little hesitant in buying this product. However, after careful research done by my daughter and watching different videos on how the product works, we decided to purchase it. She knew the possible difficulties with the product and does have patience with it (takes a couple of times before password is recognized). My daughter absolutely loves this journal/diary. Very glad we purchased it.

Ordered Two Units. Neither Works Properly.
Wow. My first ever review on Amazon, and it's driven by anger. I don't know what that says about me. If you don't care to read past here, skip to the end for a synopsis. At any rate, I have two daughters about a year apart, and both have recently been taken with Ever After High fever. They've got a few dolls and whatnot, and were enamored with the Secret Hearts Journal. Because it's something "secret" in nature (I mean it even says it right in the title), we ordered two, one for each daughter. As a bit of an aside, we made our daughters save up to purchase these, this will become an issue later. The packages arrived in a normal timely Amazon Prime fashion, and the fun begins.Day #1, Disappointment #1: Alright, I should have seen this one coming. Each unit requires 3-AAA batteries. I've got 2 daughters, so I need 6 batteries total. Unfortunately, I've only got 4 batteries on hand. I could get one unit up and running, but that would cause too much drama. My solution, send the kids to bed, have a beer, and get some more batteries tomorrow. Overall, not too bad an outcome.Day #2, Disappointment #2: And the storm begins. After I help each girl install batteries in their diary (just having to install batteries in a diary makes me sad), we go through the process of trying to set up the "voice-activated password". I don't even know where to begin; it doesn't work at all. From the get go, turning the key only causes some recorded lyrics to be spewed out of a tinny sounding speaker. Get used to it, you'll here those lyrics so often, they'll be seared into your minds eye for eternity. After some inane blather about Royals or Rebels, you might be asked to speak a password that will help you unlock the diary. I say might be, because only one of the two units went to the password request part. On the other unit, I had to pry open the cover, and find a press a "record" button, to get to the password request. No big deal so far, but we try to record a password, and... nothing. My youngest keeps trying time and time again, but the unit won't recognize the same word two times. Admittedly, my youngest has the sweetest tinniest voice, so I try. After attaining the rank of Sergeant in the USMC, you'd think I can speak clearly and authoritatively, but no dice. After trying polite terms, I even resorted to all of the "Key Marine Corps Leadership Terms", still, nothing (except for a mortified wife and a giggling child). To round out the disappointment, my oldest figured out some way to get hers open without the password. Perfect, a way out. My big girl gave it her all to help out her little sister, and, still, nothing.Well, we'd screwed around with the thing for a good chunk of time, and I was frustrated, my oldest was mildly entertained with her marginally working unit, and my youngest was crying. So I sent the kids to bed, tried to figure out what was the cause of the issue, and contemplated my situation. I could send both back and request a refund, but my oldest will complain that she could make hers work (and I don't want to pay for shipping). I could send one back, but, given the odds, I don't want to get one daughter's hopes up again (and I don't want to pay for shipping). I could throw them both in the trash (best idea yet, in my opinion). Or, I can make a lesson out of it. I let my oldest keep hers, and I know that she'll tire of it in the very near future. As for my youngest, we trashed the bum unit, and I agreed to give her a "refund". As part of the agreement, she's agreed to donate her "refund" to the Red Rhino Orphanage Project (...) at school. So, in summary, skip the frustration, and donate the money to the charity of your choice. If you still need to buy this diary, may I suggest this item in complement: http://www.amazon.com/Stiletto-TI14MC-14-OunceTitanium-Framing-Hammer/dp/B00002265Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1397017106&sr=1-1&keywords=stiletto+hammerI suggest the hammer end for smashing the plastic item, and the claw end for trying to remove the previously mentioned inane lyrics from your brain.
