Sargeant & Greenleaf Mechanical Lock install on Cannon Safe
I installed an EMP Proof Sargeant & Greenleaf Mechanical Dial lock on my Cannon Scout 19 gun safe to replace the unreliable NL Electronic digital keypad lock that came with it. After 10 years the NL Electronic Keypad lock would only open after every 4 tries or so and sometimes not open at all and lock me out after the 4th try for 10 minutes. I called Cannon Safe because of the Limited Lifetime Warranty. First they had me purchase a New Duracell or Energizer Battery with an expiration date of 2027/28. Not locking the Safe for 2 weeks because I did not trust it. When that did not work I called Cannon back. They told me they would ship me a new NL digital keypad and lock body. After waiting with my safe door left open another 4 weeks, they still have not shipped my lock. I called again to see if they had shipped it yet, and the Rep said it is probably on backorder and they would send me a tracking number once it ships. After 6 weeks of having to leave my safe door open for fear I would not be able to get it open, I started researching both digital keypad locks and Mechanical dial locks. Apparently 10-15 years is pretty common for all manufacturers digital keypad locks to go bad. Not wanting to go through this hassle again. I decided on S&G Mechanical dial lock, as they are the gold standard made in USA. I ordered the S&G lock on Amazon and received it in two days. What should have been a 1 hour job turned into a nightmare. (Shoddy Cannon Safe Craftsmanship). Started the job and found the NL Lock body only had 2 out of 4 screws holding it to the safe door. Both screws they used a drill driver to install the Phillips screws and completely walered out the Phillips head. A 3rd hole was completely smooth walered out with no screw and the 4th hole was never tapped with threads. I couldn't get one of the damaged Phillip's head screws out. I had to stop and go to the hardware store to buy an Easy out screw extractor to get it out. 3 of the 4 holes the screw threads were gungered or walered out and would not accept the new screws. I had to stop again, go to the hardware store and buy two Taps, 1/4-20 for the lock body to tap screw threads in the walered up screw holes and 8-32 for the dial ring which I knew I had to tap from my research anyway. (Do yourself a favor, buy "quality" Taps and T-handle tap drivers, ie Dewalt, or Irwin). The Harbor Freight taps don't work and are junk! I know this because I tried them first. Finally after the two trips to the hardware store I completed the task of tapping the holes. From there everything was smooth sailing. I installed the S&G Mechanical Safe dial lock by watching YouTube. Thanks S&G for making a more reliable safe lock.Who knows when I will receive the replacement NL Lock from Cannon? I am much more at easy with the S&G Mechanical dial lock.

New, works great
The supplier is one of the big and highly reputable names in the locksmith industry. +1.The unit appeared new, however, it was definitely not an unopened "as shipped" product since the production date and lot number on the box (which was factory labeled for this product) did not match that on the lock.I received this product on 9/1/24, and the factory label on the lock indicated it was manufacturer in 7/24. The paint was barely dry on this thing - definitely new stock.I replaced a 28 year old LaGard electronic lock that was working perfectly on one of my ordnance lockers, however, the age of that unit made me want to swtich. The description is just plain wrong.First, the specification sheet mentions one 9V battery. Nope, this is an entirely mechanical lock with no battery. The description mentions this was tested against expert manipulation for 20 hours. Nope, at least not the industry standard testing. This is a group 2 lock. Manipulating ratings are:Group 2 - 15 minutes (by an expert, you are not going to be hit by this except in an Oceans 11 style job)Group 2M - 2 hours against expert manipulationGroup I - 20 hours against expert manipulationGroup IR - Same as group 1, but resistent to X-Ray analysis of the wheels. Reduced service life because wheel are some sort of plastic. The group 2 is the overwhelming most common safe lock, until you get into UL TL rated (TL15, TL30, etc.) safes that require a 2M. These are the kind of safes that generally cost over $10K and meet insurance industry requirements for jewelery stores. My install went easy, but had to reshape mounting holes on the dial ring because the mounting hole locations in the door were out of spec by 1/10 of an inch as there was more tolerance for the electronic lock mounting. This is NOT the fault of the lock.

It’s a fine replacement for those digital disappointments -but instructions are not clear.
It took two days to figure out what is meant by some of the terms used, and even then…. one has to presume certain intentions of the instructions. Using a bit of logic…and disregarding the instructions… I figured it out finally (depsite the fact I am familiar with S&G combination locks.

Solid Combination Lock, Easy to Install, Excellent instructions.
