Useful Book
I am not sure what I expected, but I was a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, my adult non-reader will probably like it a lot!

The book itself was bigger than I thought so the pictures are even more engaging, especially for my little 5 month old. It is a beautiful book. The contrast between the black and white Smick and colorful Chick is visually fantastic!

As described, but not all that exciting to read.

Smick is Slick!
I liked it so much that I ordered another one. The grand-kids love the simple rhyming scheme that is humorous and makes sense. Smick and the chick spark great conversations about friendship

Minimalist fun
Snick by Doreen CroninSummary: Smick is a dog who likes to chase sticks. When he sees a chick, he wants to chase that, too. The two become friends, and Smick has a new sidekick…or sidechick, as the case may be.Pros: Minimalist in text (the story is told with only 15 different words) and pictures, this book could be used in many different ways with kids. They could add to the story by looking at the pictures. Beginning readers could read a whole book themselves. It would lend itself to a quick readers’ theater. The bold line illustrations and wordplay add to the appeal.Cons: If you’re trying to fill class time with a book, look elsewhere.

"Smick is a BIG dog" with a very short and underdeveloped story
SUMMARY: This is the blurb given for this book:"Smick is a BIG dog.Sit, Smick.Chick is a little chick.Stay, Smick! So what happens when they see a stick?"ILLUSTRATIONS: The pictures were created digitally with some mixed media. The pictures are very simple. The dog is created with simple lines as seen on the cover and there is minimal color. The dog is white on a white background. The only only color is the stick and the chick. The illustrations feel incomplete and are not eye catching.THE GOOD: There are only about two words per page which makes this a good book to share with a pre-reader or for an emerging reader to read independently.THE NOT AS GOOD: The story line is extremely short with no depth to it. This lessens the interest value for any age. The blurb I quoted above is pretty much the whole book in a nutshell. The book would have been better served if the illustrations supported the words of the story better. Instead, you are left scratching your head in confusion at times.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 3-7 (depending on child's reading ability) Pre-readers and emerging readers
