Prevents Rust
Purchased this to help prevent rust on a poolside basketball hoop, specifically where the screws had started to rust and leave streaks. The product was easy to apply and dries quickly. After a month we are pleased to say there are no rust streaks.

A semi-scientific review with tips to improve your experience
I live on an island surrounded by salt water and as a result have a lot of experience with corrosion prevention and remediation. I’ve been hunting for a corrosion preventer that dries tack free so beach sand won’t stick to it. I decided to give the Rust-Oleum product a try. No matter what you read here in the reviews IT DOES NOT DRY! It says right on the can: “…will not feel dry to the touch.” This product “dries” to a greasy material with a slight amber hue to it. The more product you put on, the more visible and darker in color it appears. It is not tack free and will attract dirt and sand. TIP: The instructions say “…apply a light, thin, even coat…”, unfortunately the supplied spray nozzle is less than ideal for this. Unless you need the pin-point accuracy of the straw applicator (which really isn't pin-point at the recommended spray distance), swap out the straw type spray nozzle for one off a spray paint can. Using this kind of nozzle results in a finer spray pattern, and at the recommended spray distance of 12-16” it will result in a very light, thin, almost invisible coating. TIP: this product glows under UV (black) light. To check your coverage, use a UV flash light to inspect the surface and you will easily see any missed spots. The blue photo shows the paint nozzle spray pattern under black light as applied to a smooth white ceramic tile in a short burst. The rest of the photos show how well the product performs against other “top shelf” corrosion inhibitors that I have experience with. I took a piece of cut-off steel pipe and sanded the surface until it was smooth and shiny. The piece was then divided into six sections and treated as follows: 1. Control, just the bare steel. 2. Rust-Oleum 3. Corrosion-X, my personal “gold standard” for protection and lubrication, but its green in color and stays wet. 4. S100, a German product and my go-to spray when appearance matters. Its clear, dries almost tack free and smells nice (similar to Rust-oleum) 5. SP-400, by CRC, an old & well know chemical company. This product forms a thick, green, waxy coating that is very good at protecting something sitting in storage. 6. T-9, developed by Boeing. This product also “dries” to a thicker, clear, waxy, slightly tacky coating. The first photo “Day 1” is what the test sample looked like overnight. Notice how after only 24 hours its already rusty! No rain, no fog, just coastal salt air. The second photo “Day 8” is after a week outside. No rain during this time, just salt air. It appears that Rust-oleum and S100 are showing a little darkening versus the others. I took photo “Day 12” because we had a little rain overnight. The test sample has been lying flat face up and we got 0.25” of rain which greatly accelerated the corrosion. Rustoleum appears to be doing the worst of the 5 sprays tested, although they all show some degree of degradation. The “Day 14” photo is after another overnight shower of .15”. The best performers are the “waxy” products T-9 & SP-400. In conclusion, the Rustoleum may not be the best choice for all out protection, but it is relatively less expensive, is easy to apply, provides some measure of protection, but not as good as the waxy products.
