Is the rechargeable battery lithium or NiMH?

The flashlight uses a 'Ni-MH 3.6V 80mAh' battery pack. The battery pack is not what would be called, "user serviceable". The leads coming from the battery pack are soldered onto the board. However, if you can solder you could easily replace the battery pack. The battery pack is three large coin cell like batteries tabed together horizontally. After searching the internet I found lots of sellers offering a pack similar to this but they are staked and tabed vertically. I could find no sellers offering the pack horizontally at this time unless you want to buy 100, 200 or 1000 at a time on Alibaba. The case design does not allow for the vertical battery pack. I estimate that the pack would cost between $4.00 - $12.00 USD based on the cost of similar battery packs sold at this time (8-28-2016), that does not include shipping. I took mine apart because it stopped charging and wanted to replace the battery pack if I could find it cheap. Unfortunately, at that cost it's much more economical to just purchase a new flashlight.

Can nightlight mode be turned off, so that the unit is only a power failure light?

Yes. You can turn it to emergency only.

If the night light is turned off, will the unit still automatically turn on when the power is out?

"No" is not an accurate answer. If the light is NOT plugged into an active power outlet and it is turned off by the side selector switch then the emergency light will not work when the light is plugged into an active power outlet. BUT if you then turn the night light on OR off again while it is plugged into an active wall outlet then the emergency light will work when there is a power outage. This IS a very useful emergency light whether you like the night light on or not, it works both ways.

Does it turn on automaticamly when there is a power outage?
