will this work for elderly people with severe arthritis?

The short answer is YES. I too have arthritis tho maybe not as severe as yours but the 19 inch is the one I use the most although the 32 inch is also necessary for certain situations. Buy both as a set. I hope this has helped.

Will this pick up the newspaper from the doorstep?

Absolutely. These are the best things since sliced bread. I just had back surgery 2 weeks ago and am not supposed to bend, lift or twist. I use these to do everything from picking things up off the floor to getting laundry in and out of the machines, to picking up and putting down the dog's food and water dishes. This morning at the office I picked up a grape off the floor. I have picked up an individual pill and a dime off the floor. I picked up my newspaper off the driveway this morning.

Can it pick up a pill from the floor?

Yes! Both of them can. I honestly wasn't sure, so just now, I went and put two pills on the floor - a vit d, which is round and slippery kind of, and a tiny thyroid flat pill and I could pick up each pill with both of these grabbers! I am not using them much now, but I had surgery 5-1/2 weeks ago and they were very very handy for me for the first 2-3 weeks as I could not bend over at all!

What is the jaw width on these?

4-1/2" on the 32" grabber and 4" on the 19" grabber. That's not absolute, because the jaw material is flexible and slanted slightly, so the actual width can be slightly larger, if necessary.

Saves knees and back from simple injures if used with care

Having two different lengths makes this even more useful. Either one picks up the tiniest pieces with ease. Great tools. Not just for floors. I even used one to raise a curtain up over a tall rod one day. My husband and I so appreciate this tool.

Very Sturdy Tools

Very useful tool. I like the metal construction for the tubes, no flexing. I had also purchased a plastic foldable version. The foldable version is only useful for travel.These grippers are great for picking up hot item from the microwave oven, like a coffee cup or a ramen noodle container. No recommended for use to pick items from a conventional oven or a stove top. THE RUBBER WILL MELT AND MAKE A MESS. There are no guidelines on the use of grippers, but I suggest not using on anything over 250°F.

The gripper heads made picking small to large items a breeze!

The short grabber is excellent for use in closeness to items you need, no need to get into uncomfortable positions to reach something on your bedside table.The longer grabber is great for those items on the top shelf or that have fallen too far away to reach; it helps me reach items I don’t use as frequently and are out of reach.The sturdy grip handles fit large and small hands, the swivel head is great for those item that are situated at a hard angle.So glad we selected the duel pack, the work great for both of us.

Decent quality, but the claws are a bit thin and weak. Only useful for very light items.

I purchased these when recovering from a temporary back problem, and they helped when I needed to pick up something light. More difficult to use for heavy items I tried to pick up from my fridge. The claws are not heavy duty enough so I often have a bit of difficulty gripping items especially if they are wider or heavier. The pack of 2 sizes was useful and provided flexibility for items I needed to pick up closer.

Perfect grabbers!

I love these grabbers! I hope they last. I use both sizes everyday! Easy to use. Firm grip. Not rough on hand use. Great for my arthritic hands and great for holding onto, picking up, and moving around what you need. They grip tightly and hold strongly. I highly recommend!

Amazing-tough and effective

We have tried different styles and manufacturers, and this one is by far the best. Not only is it sturdy and you don't worry about it falling apart the next time you use it, but I can pick up a dime from a tile floor time and time again, every time .I will not be purchasing any of the competitors from here on out.

They actually work and are easy to handle.

I have two of the shorter ones and one longer one and they are wonderful. I can remove things from the dryer that stay way in the back. I think they are telling me they do not want to leave that warm environment! I use a mobility scooter and it helps me so much. If I happen to drop a dental soft pick on the floor, and they are very tiny and flat, it picks it right up so easily. Also with very tiny pills, no problem.
