Great Content If You Can Overlook the Editing Flaws
I got what I needed out of this book: to learn the different camera shots and movements and the reasons one is used over another for a given scene. I was aware of the editing issues before I bought it, but I was willing to take a chance because it seemed to have the content I needed. In that regard, I was not disappointed. The editing flaws are not catastrophic; just misspellings here and there. While these flaws are unacceptable for a professionally published book, I still consider it a good purchase for my needs.

Real book: 4 stars; Kindle book: 2 stars.
If you're going to get this, get the actual printed book. The book itself is pretty good. Somewhat outdated now, but the underlying concepts still apply in my mind. The Kindle version sucks. What makes this book useful are all the diagrams and photos, which while still in the Kindle version, lose most of their value when they're presented digitally (at least in Kindle format). The photos are meant to be viewed next to the adjacent page that describes them and the Kindle just can't do that. The quality of the photos also suffers from image compression and the overall shrunken dimensions of the Kindle screen (when compared to the actual book).

A fantastic, must have book for Directors!
If you have any interest in being any kind of director, this book is like a masterclass. I’ve been directing shorts and documentaries for a while and always have this book by my side. Explains everything well with framing options that have helped me break a creative block or helped with storyboarding. Can’t recommend highly enough for the person who’s serious about being a director.

From a vision to the screen....
You better put on your thinking cap, have several arms, and eyes in the back of your head if you're thinking of "directing" a film. Seeing the concept is one thing but, putting all the shots together is more than saying...action! "Shot by Shot" gives the director everything he/she needs regarding process, elements of continuity, the workshop to the moving camera.Make sure you take the time to read and study this book, especially if you're a novice. This is not a book you merely scan through or think you can skip some of it's processes. You will lose time and money, and losing either one of these can cost you your film. It will get shelved."Shot by Shot" is very detailed;a book you want to keep close by, even if you think you know what you're doing. It will also help you to get what you want from everyone involved....a great film, and another chance at directing.:-}And as always with Amazon, the price was right.

Knowing What to Look for!
This book is an absolute must for filmmakers. It is instructive on what you expect from your cinamatographer and determining if your director understands the screenplay the way the writer wrote it.All the emphasis is done with camera work. The director (if it is not you) must know where and how to place the emphasis. But you have to know also. How else can you be critical of a shot or series of shots.Steven Katz, the author of "Shot By Shot" understands what filmmaking is all about. That is why this book continues to sell year after year. "Shot by Shot" is the icon for scene setting and filmmaking.

Some useful bits, but rather outdated
Not a bad book, but could do with a new edition. As this was written in the 90's there are some large chunks of info regarding the use of computers for editing/visual effects/story boarding that are almost cringe worthy. On the plus side, many of the techniques talked about are timeless, I definitely learned a few things while reading it, and began to consider other things which I thought I already knew - which is always a good sign. I gained a better understanding of looking at a number of shots in sequence and working out their effect. It is nicely illustrated; personally I think some of the story boards are worth the admission price alone; and gives a good overall view of the roll of the director. However, I feel that it only brushed the surface on the some subjects that interested me, and went into detail on other areas that I found less interesting (thought this is obviously personal taste.)In short, I don't think this is the best book on directing out there, but it is certainly not bad.

Useful but Clinical
This is a well thought out and well presented book, showing you how to visualise from script to screen. The diagrams and pictures are clean and well explained. My only problem with this book is the clinical nature of the writing and how the creative process of filmmaking is over simplified as merely visualising the script. It's also quite heavy going. Having said that, I do feel it is an essential book for any potential director out there and for anyone really interested in how film works. It is showing its age now as things have moved on considerably in terms of technique, style and technology but it is still a very good book.

interesting
Nice way to see how concepts are put into frame. Quite technical with its attempt to justify variations on its own theme and how different situations require different view points with examples of films to assist.

I swear by this book, and have bought it as a gift, many, many times. I've read it cover to cover but generally use it as a reference manual. Probably the most important book I own.
