No, you don't need to use a trainer tire. A regular tire will work fine. Unless you have two rear wheels you have to decide what works best most of the time for you; you don't want to change tires just to go back outside. A training tire will last longer but won't be pleasant to ride outside. A regular road tire will wear out quicker on a trainer but will work best in both scenarios. If you have multiple wheels or bikes, it's an easier decision to make.
