Heavy metals?
I use homemade compost on my garden for the most part. I went to my local big-box gardening store in search of something to supplement my compost because I expanded my garden this year. I picked up this product, and when I brought it home, I did a bit of research. It concerned me. It contains low levels of heavy metals, which might help the plants, but do they end up in those who eat the fruits and vegetables? Do they accumulate in the soil? What about runoff? Older product packaging claims to have numerous "essential" nutrients, something like 13, but there are only a handful of essential nutrients. That claim is not on the package I bought today. There is a claim, however, that it is approved for organic farming by "a USDA agent," so maybe the information I dug up is outdated? I will give this product a try on my flowers, but I hesitate to use it on my edibles. If anyone knows of a fertilizer that is truly organic, please let me know. I will report back on its effect on other beds in my yard and reserve my compost for the veggies and fruits.
