Rebecca (The Criterion Collection) [DVD]

It is the classics that were true works of art, unlike the junk that is made today. This is a masterpiece, and the acting is excellent.

My wife loves this movie. The DVD played great and the special features were fun to watch as well.

Definitely a must-see Alfred Hitchcock movie! Joan Fontaine is classic as the frightened, timid wife of Laurence Olivier, a man too wrapped up in his own turmoil to see what is happening in his own house. Great story and actors with, of course, the legendary Alfred Hitchcock as the helm.

Great classic movie. I enjoyed it, but was disappointed that there wasn't an option for hearing impared.

What an amazing edition. Such a spectacular film. This 4k digital restoration is dazzling. Laurence Olivier conveyed a range of emotion not often seen in film in this era. All the subtle hints of confusion, loss and pain Just amazing. Judith Anderson was absolutely stunning in the role of Mrs. Danvers. This edition includes a radio interview with her in 1986 where she talks about the sexual tones that many have pointed out in Mrs. Danvers character. It's an amazing feature. Also, to learn so much about author Daphne du Maurier with an in depth documentary reveals much about the origins of the story and how it connects to her personally. Also included are 3 radio versions of the Rebecca from 1938, 1941 and 1950. I mean, there's so much here to explore it's almost overwhelming. I spent half a day watching everything. Criterion has done something truly fantastic. It's worth every penny.

I only gave this a 4-star review because on the 2nd DVD, there is a documentary about Daphne du Maurier (almost entirely in French, with English subtitles) that is fascinating. I had read "Rebecca" in high school, and I may have read another of her novels, but I certainly had no idea how prolific she was or about the tortured artistic life that she led. This documentary was excellent. Also, a brief documentary on the special effects present in the film version of "Rebecca" was also fascinating. The matte paintings gave the film a sense of grandness, and the miniatures of Manderley, although apparent when the toy car drove past, were a fantastic tribute to human ingenuity, considering there were no digital effects available to the amazing craftsment behind the scenes. There are other extras, such as the auditions of other potential "Mrs. de Winter" actresses, including Vivien Leigh and Anne Baxter. No matter who auditioned, the only person right for the role was Joan Fontaine. She couldn't have been better. The main drawback of this collection, and a shocking one, is that there were no subtitles. None. I kept looking for them and I could not find them. I don't understand why they went to the time and trouble of making this a "Criterion Collection," and yet they couldn't be bothered adding subtitles. The actual film itself doesn't look that much better than any copy you'd see on TV. It didn't seem sharper or clearer. It's old and it looks old. And the screenplay doesn't really hold up. The story goes on too long and there were any number of times that I wished for Joan Fontaine to really stand up to everyone in the movie, since to a fault almost all of them treated her horribly. But Joan was great, and it's easy to see why she was finally cast. Again, the extras make this collection, so if in fact you are a die-hard fan of Hitchcock or du Maurier, this might be worth the investment.

The new 2017 Criterion Collection blu-ray of ‘Rebecca’ comes into direct competition with the 2011 MGM blu-ray The Criterion blu-ray has the magical words “4K digital restoration”, giving it a theoretical advantage over MGM’s ten-year-old 2-K (?) digital restoration, but the actual improvement is not dramatic, at least on my 40 inch, five year-old JVC TV. Both blu-rays look quite good. Of course, if you own a state-of-the-art 70 inch 4-K television (or plan to), the choice is obvious. Making the choice easier, the price of the old MGM blu-ray is twice that of the new Criterion blu-ray (apparently the MGM is out-of-print). An excellent release of a great film. Expensive but worth it as this is a hard to find disc

クライテリオンで以前でたDVDと内容は同じと考えてよい。この名作をブルーレイで楽しめるのは素晴らしく、 また、様々な当時のラジオ放送版なども含まれ相変わらず付録が素晴らしい。 オーディション映像も特筆すべきで、フォンテインがなぜ主役を勝ち得たのかがよくわかる。

Me entristece que llegó un poco maltratado el producto. El embalaje no fue el mejor... Ojala tengan más suerte otros. La película es muy buena; personalmente es de mis favoritas de Hitchcock. Los extras no están subtitulados, la película sólo trae sub. en inglés...
