No, do not run wide. The are true to size - standard. However, they are made to stretch and flex. The rubber around the foot has to be tight, to stay on while swimming. They are generally more difficult to get on, but excellent at staying on.

How do the sizes translate to actual shoe sizes?

These run small. I always buy a 39 or 40 in Euro sizes, but these -- 36 - 42 Euro -- are too small. Had to return them and get the next larger size.

Why do these come covered in slimy stuff?

If you are talking about a size 7 in mens shoes, which is like an 8 or so in women's shoes, then get the L MEN 7-9. (Does he has fairly large feet for his age?) I wear a size 8-8.5 in women's shoes and got the Large size fins. They fit correctly. Plus buying a size a little too big is MUCH better than too small, because his feet will grow!
