I own a pair of speakers that have what appear to have silk dome tweeters but make my ears bleed. How are these in those regards?

They appear to be fairly flat and do well as an inexpensive replacement speaker. I would look at the specifications for the speakers that you have and match them appropriately.

Can I run a full range channel directly to this or is a crossover required?

I would recommend a cross over if you run a full range through it it can become quite distorted

Why did this recently double in price? And why is it listed as "$42.35 ($21.18 / Item)". This suggests it is a pair when it is really a single speaker

I bought 2 maybe 6 years ago and I believe I paid close to $100 for the pair.
