is this a wireless remote? there is no existing wall mounted remote. Is it battery operated and programable like the visor remote?

Any idea if this is compatible with a Model 1280C Liftmaster opener? 2 or 4 wire?

As Catherine said, it worked my 10 year old opener with no problem and was connected to the existing 2-wire run from the opener to our back door. All things work, including the light and lock control.

How does this mount to the wall? I received this item w/2 screws & plastic anchors. Should it have a base plate that it snaps onto?

Examine back of unit, there is a mounting hole which fits over a screw placed directly into the support wall. Make sure its fits tight (i.e. screw most of the way into the wall). Then, remove the white plastic cover on front which is the raise/lower control (use a screw driver on the top, there is an opening for this). There will be another screw hole showing. Use screw directly into wall, replace cover. No mounting bracket, 2 screws; lower one into a mounting hole on back, upper one set from the front.
