A classic book with great insights into mountaineering from those who really know their stuff. It gets you in the right direction of all areas of mountaineering well worth the read and highly recommended if you intend to plan or spend any time in the High Country.

A fantastic book. Sections on food and weather, as well as many other subjects I would have never expected are treated eloquently and with tremendous research and experience. More than 200 people worked together to create this book and they did not waste their time. Their is more knowledge in this book than anyone could appreciate in a single reading, I intend to give many good friends a copy.

Harvey Manning has been an unsung hero of modern day Backpacking. The books he wrote, before we knew of the modern sport and industry of Backpacking, greatly formed how our sport developed. The changes in how we treat the great out of doors today, from the destructive days of Camp Craft and Pioneering to Leaving no trace behind were causes Harvey Manning championed. It is well to review where we came from in this sport now and then.

It's a classic and belongs in the library of anyone who loves rambling the "hills". From the casual to the serious lover ofmountaineering, it's a reference manual to techniques and an homage to the sport.
