There are plenty of excuses for not studying the Bible. At least this book can eliminate one of those excuses. With this book in hand you cannot say, "I don't know where to begin." Warren gives you an exact prescription that can be followed by anybody.I learned of this book from a sermon I listened to online. I bought an older edition of the book. You can buy it new under a slightly different name but I sort of liked the idea of getting the original version written before the author was famous from his Purpose Driven Life books.One may get the impression from today's thick "study Bibles" that Bible study means to read the text while referencing the notes that some person wrote at the bottom of the pages for you (or the information in some devotional book). But when reading Mr. Warren's book what is emphasized is not reading somebody else's notes but taking your own notes. Dynamic Bible Study, as he calls it, is not just a passive activity of taking in information, it requires some work.This type of Bible study doesn't have to be terribly time-consuming, but it's not something you can do very well in a noisy environment. It's not like reading a novel where you can just pick it up and put it down every time there is an interruption. Since you are taking notes and really having to put some thought into it you really need to set out a block of time the way you would if you were going to the gym for a physical workout.Anyway, there aren't very many books like this out there and discovering this book really raised my esteem for the author. I've never read any of his other books and always figured he was just another one of those pop psychology preachers. I don't think that he probably invented any of these methods for Bible study, but the way he puts it all together into a logical whole that is accessible to all Christians is really quite an achievement.

As a pastor I meet many people who read the Bible and are either not able to comprehend or accurately interpret it. This book has not only helped me, but many others "read the Bible for all it's worth". Rick does a great job in putting this study method collection together, and making sure it is more than just study for knowledge sake. Most of the studies are stand alone or can be used in combination with the other studies in the book for extensive study. Many of the "how to study the Bible" books I have read are not very easy to apply. The methods in this book are straight forward and very reproducible. After a year or so of using and applying these methods, I only have to refer back to the book from time to time because they have become so ingrained as how I read and study. If you are wanting something to help you discover God through His word, discover who you are in Him, and be challenged to apply God's truth in your life, this book is a great start. It is now also sold as "Bible Study Methods".

Though out of print, this book can now be found under the title "Personal Bible Study Methods - 12 Ways to Study the Bible on Your Own" ISBN 0-9669895-0-2. Why settle for picking up little nuggets from your pastor or radio preachers, when you can go for the motherload? Rick Warren does a great job showing you how to dig for the gold in God's word on your own. He show's you how to use Bible study aids in such a way that you will never have to question again what God has to say about anything in your life. This should be required reading for every serious Christian and I would recommend that it be a required adult course in every Christian church.

Even though the book was used previously, it is still of high quality and I am very glad to have made the purchase. I look forward to reading what is within the pages.
