So far so good - Better than the Lindam Sure Shut Axis Gate.
Our landlord refused to allow us to drill holes in the banister at the top of the stairs so I had to scour the Internet looking for a pressure stairgate that was safe. What I found was that almost all pressure gates say they shouldn't be used at the top of the stairs - except this one. It does have the bar along the bottom but the step plate helps with that and in the three weeks we've been using it we've not had any trips. The other thing that I did for safety's sake was not to install it right at the top of the stairs but rather a little further along the upstairs hallway, between a door jamb and the wall, so if we ever do trip it won't be straight down the flight of stairs. But so far so good, no trips yet. It's pretty easy to install, though it did take a while to get the lower pads positioned right because they need to be parallel to the floor and under pressure they twist a bit, but once I got it in place it has held steady without the need to tighten it yet. I have very active twins who grab on to the gate and pull and push it to get it to open. It's scary to watch because of the stairs but so far the gate has held fast.I also bought a Sure Shut Axis Gate from Lindam for the kitchen door downstairs and while that one also holds fast it's much harder to open than the BabyDan. I usually can't open the Lindam with one hand whereas I can the BabyDan, which is helpful when carrying a kid up the stairs. I've also tripped over the bar of the Lindam (which doesn't have a step plate).

Sturdy gate. Easy to install.
An excellent and easy to fit gate on the whole. Ours was made more complicated as fitting on the stairs meant trying to fit under the stair rail on one side and the bannister on the other so requires a bit of shuffling around but got there in the end. Would buy again.

Gate Of Freedom
We have installed this on the bottom stair of the house. It does the trick, the triangular cover fits over the bottom cross bar to prevent tripping which is 99.5% effective. Why can't they design this product without the bottom cross bar?
