The contemporary American auteur Michael Mann’s bold artistic sensibility was already fully formed when he burst out of the gate with Thief, his debut feature. James Caan stars, in one of his most riveting performances, as a no-nonsense ex-con safecracker planning to leave the criminal world behind after one final diamond heist—but he discovers that escape is not as simple as he’d hoped. Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would also define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.DIRECTOR-APPROVED DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew digital restoration from a 4K film transfer of the director’s cut, approved by director Michael MannAudio commentary featuring Mann and actor James CaanNew interviews with Mann, Caan, and Johannes Schmoelling of the band Tangerine Dream, which contributed the film’s soundtrackTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic Nick James Review: Maybe the best movie ever produced - I can’t believe how spectacular this is in 4K. Breathtaking. There’s nothing in the same ballpark. The music and acting are absolutely superb, the picture is so clear it makes other movies pale, even movies like the Godfather. It’s not close. Thief 4k
Great movie. One of Michael Mann's best. James Caan said it was his favorite part.

Frank: Portrait of a Thief
This is definitely my favorite film with James Caan outside of his famous role as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Now it’s great to own “Thief” on 4K and Blu Ray of the Criterion collection to watch at my leisure via my projector in my home theater. This movie established James Caan as a no nonsense macho leading man in one of his commanding and straight roles. And James definitely delivers in this stylish and detailed hard hitting drama directed by Michael Mann in his very impressive directoral debut. A must see for action drama film fans.

Early Michael Mann thriller driven by a great Caan performance
James Caan drives this early Michael Mann film with a committed and believable performance. While the story feels muddled sometimes, and seems to just kind of end, this thriller is worth watching, if just to see the beginning of Mann's best period of work.

Superb film and blu ray
I've watched this film several times and each time it gets better. And technically, the standard blu ray is perfect. In fact, I had originally bought the 4K disc version, and once again I had a freeze up--despite carefully wiping the 4K disc and trying it on a couple of different players. So unless there's no other choice, I'm sticking with the standard blu ray version of titles.

About as perfect as a movie can get.
Movies like this don't come around too often. Seldom do all the pieces come together and fit so perfectly. Script, performances, music, cinematography, and direction – they're all right on the money, complementing each other in one terrific suspenseful film. It doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy!

Underrated, overlooked Mann Gem....
For whatever reason, this movie is under the radar. Caan is great, the movie is great and suspenseful. Mann's directorial debut. Very nice to have it in the 4K format. Nice little gem all around.

The authenticity of the heist dynamics and the relationships between the characters was palpable. I first saw this when it was first released and then now. This film aged well and I enjoyed it even more this time around. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see an intelligent and engaging story that doesn't dwell on graphic violence and really explores the mind of the main character, the thief, as played by a young James Caan.

Great movie! This movie is in the same vein as Heat. James Caan's character and what he does is the primary focus, opposed to Heat's ensemble character focus. They are very similar movies, however. Caan is good in everything he's in, in my opinion. He is believable as a hardened criminal, but you like him, because of his charisma and his skill. Caan pulls you into the movie, when he interacts with the rest of the cast. He gets a big assist from the realism of the story telling and the directing style. I love Michael Mann's work!
