Love the Lightscribe tech.
While it functions well as a burner with any disk, the reason I bought this model is because of the Lightscribe function. It requires special, Lightscribe disks for that function to work, but I feel it’s worth it. These disks have a special coating that is etched by the drive’s laser to create custom labels, using the Lightscribe application. Through various templates included with the application, you can add text, clip art, and even photos. No matter if the image is simple text or a complex mix of text & images, it takes approximately 18 minutes to render the image. NOTE: It does NOT reproduce images in color. Everything it “prints” on the disk is in shades of gray.

Add the drive thats missing from your new laptop
When my ten or twelve laptop started to get flaky I purchased a new Windows 10 laptop with much more speed, more memory, more disk space - but no DVD drive. This was a problem for several reasons: I like to archive my photos on DVD, I like to transcribe my vinyl onto audio CD and I like to use LightScribe disk labeling. I have a whole spindle of DVD+R that I got on sale and like to use. This little beauty does it all. I didn't rate Tech Support since I took the drive out of the box, plugged it in and it worked like a charm. Very reasonable price and you can download the free LightScribe Simple Labeler app or for a few $ get the Full Function Labeler.

Mine Works, But...
... it look a little trial & error, and some luck. I'll mention the luck first, as I imagine if you are reading this review before purchasing, you're looking at it for its LightScribe ability. The LightScribe software isn't included, and has not been supported by HP, its developer, for several years, since before Windows 10. My luck is in that I kept my old Windows 7 laptop around specifically for its built-in LightScribe drive, so all I had to do was copy the files to a flash drive, then add them to folders with the same paths to my Windows 10 laptop. So if you have a Windows 7 computer, or possibly Windows 8, at your disposal, you may be able to do the same. Otherwise, it might be more complicated. The trial & error was in figuring out which of the two USB cables to use to get my computer to see it. The booklet provided doesn't offer any kind of assistance, but once I figured it out, it really was plug & play. I first tested it with a DVD, which played with no problem. Then, I tried burning an MP3 disc, and then the label, as I still had a stack of LightScribe discs. Was able to do both with no issues. Not sure how often I'll need it, but at least now I can eCycle my Windows 7 laptop.

Works as Expected
OK, I haven't fully used this yet; however it is up and running with no real instructions. I plugged it in and it was seen and installed. I had one question from Microsoft when I started. I had no idea what to choose. I called and they came in and looked and told me what to do. I played a CD with no problem. My lightscribe recognized it when I pulled them up. I have spent too much time with the other Firstcom I bought (review on Amazon). I so recommend this super slim drive. I can start burning and labeling my DVD/CDs again. I took a chance with no reviews yet and have exactly what I wanted. The other drive does not even have a website!!!

Cheap. May be worth it with some tinkering.
So far I've wasted two lightscribe discs. The third one came out right. For one: there are two cables u need to plug in usb, one for data and a little power, then another for power. Don't attempt to use without two cables. My usb port may be messed up, though I've used it a couple times and it's a brand new desktop computer. When I switched ports I finally got lightscribe to finish. I can't say it's the port that made the difference because I only burnt one lightscribe disc. These tests only apply to the lightscribe side of burning. I haven't done a regular burn yet.

Very Disappointing! Did Not Work with my MacBook Pro (Mojave OS)
Very disappointed! I give it 1 star because it will allow me to burn music in iTunes as well as dvd’s. However I bought it specially for the lightscribe function (Because my MacBook Pro 2013 has internal optical drive pre-installed. The software will allow me to create the label however when it’s actually time for me to burn it onto the disc, the error message says “lightscribe device not found” I am running Mojave OS and this external drive will not show up. I checked in Finder (checked external drive box) l looked in disk utilities as well, still did not show! I reinstalled, scoured internet for software, talked with AppleCare extensively... Nothing worked! Very disappointed because advertisements said that this TPFEEL lightscribe external drive will work with Mac OS, But it did not work for me. Will return for refund expeditiously!

This is a very nice dvd player/burner
This DVD player/burner is a high quality unit compared to another one I have. It's a touch heavier but that's what I like about it. It feels solid and of good craftsmanship. It's extremely quiet compared to the other brand I have as well. If you're looking for a DVD burner at a decent price I recommend this unit. Sometimes the cheapest price isn't the best deal. This has a very good price and well worth every cent I payed.

Works inconsistently
I am close to returning this drive. It is very inconsistent. I burned a CD and then flipped it over and couldn't burn the lightscribe label after many tries. I tried a new CD and was able to burn the label and then flipped it over to try and burn the contents from iTunes and that failed. So, I have a labeled cd with no music and a music CD with no label. Do I dare try a third CD? Also, I successfully burned two previous front and back. However, it takes multiple tries to get the drive to recognize the CDs so even when it works it is not easy. I have tried two other lightscribe drives in the past six months and all they are faulty. I think it's time to give up on the technology, which I know is unsupported anyway.
