Does the handle rotate separate from the wheel on all sanders or are there different versions of this sander.

The handle rotates the sanding wheel. You hold the molding to determine the pressure against the sand paper on the wheel. Only one version to my knowledge

How does this compare with a powered disk sander?

This one you crank by hand, would be the most obvious answer. And it has guides for 45 degree angles... I don't know, it is what it is. It doesn't have the power of a powered disc sander... ?

can you use different grits if so, how do they attach?

From my understanding Logan only offers the one grit which has to be applied to the wheel after removing the used sandpaper. You can however find alternatives.

NEW PROBLEM! I am trying to sand the 0.25" edge of 0.25" x 1.5" maple. The 3/8" thick alignment bar can't keep the 1.5" side steady for sanding.

Strongly recommend you cut a piece of 1" X 1" scrap cut to 45 on end and use against the alignment bar with work piece held to inside. It works for me.
