They will both remove and install filters which is a must in some situations
I bought several other sets from Amazon which unfortunately I had to return because the project I was working on require me to be off site and I couldn't chance not having the correct tool, and these were the ones that came through and worked for me. One of the filter wrenches has smooth flat edges which is great for installing a filter, and the other one has knurled round edges which is good for moving a filter when you don't care if you damage it and just need to get a good grip so you can loosen it if someone else put the filter on to tight.

Good idea--could use better execution
The basic premise of how these work is great. I'm not impressed with the quality. They feel a little loose, and there should be some kind of spring or lock to keep it tight on the filter while you're unscrewing it. On so may cars, the filter is difficult to get at, so the last thing ou need is your filter wench falling off with every turn. It wouldn't take much to make this a really great tool (BTW, as a band-aid I put a large rubber band around it to keep it on the filter)

Sturdy and game changing if you haven't used them yet
I've been struggling to change the oil filter on my 2006 Honda civic for the last almost 2 years now by hand - because my other vehicles had a different design location for the oil filter. When I got the Civic and had to do the first oil change I quickly learned that getting the oil filter off was going to be a struggle because it's recessed. My neighbor introduced me to a tool like this that made the job WAY easier - so I found this set and grabbed it.So the trick to removing the oil filter with this tool is to cycle it completely the other direction for it to grab and turn the counter clock wise rotation - to remove the filter - it took me a few minutes to figure it out.So this set is pretty heavy, and I mean solid - it's not shiny polished metal, it like the dark black metal you have to oil or it will rust, like bits to a screw driver, if understand what I mean? So, take care of this set if you live in a humid environment. This is definitely worth the price of admission if do your own oil changes and you have a car that has an oil filter that is recessed up into a location that is hard to put your hand around the filter.

Works well with all types of filters
I used the knurled one to remove a stripped 4Runner cartridge housing. These are notorious for either stripping or the tabs breaking off, making it a headache to remove without ruining it even more. That’s why Toyota offers metal replacements. I had a customer come in with one damaged by the dealership and needed me to replace it with an aluminum piece. The knurled removal tool quickly became my go-to for grabbing on the housing. The way the tool retracts to its smallest size was a huge plus as I can stack and store these two in a tray without an issue. Definitely recommending to all mechanics who are still using universal cartridge filter kits that are aluminum and wear out. Performs better than other expensive tools I have.

Durable quality
This is a well thought out design for tightening or loosening an oil filter. There are 2 sizes for availability: 1/2" and 3/8", so it has the adapters you'll need. The finishing has good gripping. It's heavy duty quality; should last "forever". It's powder coated so it shouldn't rust easily. The slim design makes it easier to get into harder to reach areas. It has torque screws in it so it's serviceable if it needs to be taken apart for some reason.
