Can this be used in a top-loading washer?

No - this is specifically manufactured for front loading machines and not top loaders - Minerva

My sheets didn't change color; was I supposed to pause the machine so it can soak?

I had same problem when I used, I put that in my review. I was contacted by company once, with no further contact following. I do not recommend this product!

Can this be used on carpets?

This pod works in your washing machine. If your carpet fits in your washer, then the only question is what fiber is the carpet made from? I used it to dye cotton pants and it worked great, but the red polyester (or maybe nylon) labels didn’t take on the dye.

can I dye black to orange?

Bleach the black item first, it will bring it to a lighter cream/orange shade and then can be dyed your desired orange or any other shade for that matter.
