A hauntingly sexy musical journey....
Funnily enough my first encounter with Enigma's MCMXC A.D. was back in September 1994 on a return flight from a holiday on Malta when it was the pilot's music of choice for piping through to the cabin during a delay for take-off and what a perfect choice! Right from the first words spoken it truly is "music for relaxation and meditation" so was ideal for the circumstances and certainly proved very agreeable to many of the frustrated passengers (who wanted to know what it was/who by) and, for me, has been much-loved ever since. I did have the album on cassette, but years of use have degraded the quality and so, having recently changed my car to one with a CD player (yep, I'm now firmly into the 21st century folks!) decided it was finally time to upgrade my copy and so treated myself to this wonderful example of musical genius on a laser bright CD. I love all the tracks but my absolute favourites have to be (1) the erotic Principles of Lust, (2) the rocky Mea Culpa and (3) the lilting Rivers of Belief, but usually I just play the whole thing through anyway! Suddenly it's been like I'm hearing it for the first time all over again as the sounds swap between left & right, dipping then soaring from the four speakers and sweeping all around to gather you in... mmm, it really does make for a haunting, relaxing (yet uplifting) & very sexy experience which I thoroughly recommend!

ITS FANTASTIC. =enigma mcmxc a.d.
In my view sorry to go against the 'very odd' product description, but ive heard this a million times over and STILL am not bored of it. The super line up and mergings, and fave tracks mea culpa and Back to the rivers of belief/ halleluyah, are ASTOUNDING , mesmorizing. downright BRILLIANT.10/10. I lost mine the other day as decorated the bedroom BIG PANIC..had to replace it! THAT'S HOW GOOD IT IS . (7Lives is also amazing). but this one..can;t be beaten. ps , its VERY VERY sexy.

Good but not perfect.
Given that my usual musical tastes run to rock and heavy prog, this is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I have had the CD (and consequently FLAC file) for ages, but I really wanted the album on vinyl.I am not disputing the music; you like it or you do not. I like it and I thought the vinyl version would be a great addition to my collection.I know this is a picture album and that I am supposed to see the vinyl, but that does not mean it should be badly covered and protected. The album comes in a basic clear plastic cover. This has diagonal slots cut in each corner for some reason. In my case, the record arrived with the vinyl sticking out of one cut slot. After a serious clean with a vacuum record cleaner, I found surface noise levels were not great, but better than some I have had lately. The record itself was flat; a minor miracle with some re-issues.I was expecting a very hefty bass line, given the nature of the CD. The bass was not as deep as expected, but the detail was very impressive. I like music, but have little idea of how it is produced, but I definitely felt that I knew how this record had been put together after listening to the vinyl version.Overall, a good piece of vinyl, but I wish it had been better protected.

Sublime, erotic and dark
Absolute classic. Haunting music, superb vocals and an incredibly coherent production. So much more than a chill out album as others have described it, it resonates with dark undertones and eroticism...im not even going to tell you the sort of things i got up to as a young man with this playing in the background. Calling this a chill out album is like calling the Taj Mahal a building. It is a deeply beautiful album that is pretty much based upon the Marquis de Sade - a french noble and famed libertine. His sexual licentiousness and disregard for societies moral judgements punctuated his whole life. I havent listened to this album for a few years and recently remembered it and went online and bought a copy immediately. So so glad i did, it is truly excellent. Dont let the chill out tag put you off, its not what it seems. Enjoy! Oh and its great for doing...erm stuff to if your the sort of person who lights candles, incense and plays for a while.
