Review "Channel 4, and a star was born this week, in the shape of Guy Martin, presenter of How Britain Worked" (Caitlin Moran The Times) About the Author Guy Martin is a British motorcycle racer and mechanic. Born in 1981, he followed in his father's foosteps by racing bikes, and in 2011 starred in the cult documentary Closer to the Edge about the 2010 TT Races in the Isle of Man. Passionate about maintaining the legacy of the Industrial Revolution's hard grafters, he has previously made a documentary for the BBC, called The Boat that Guy Built, in which he travelled along Britain's canal networks using inventions of the Industrial era.

brilliant read
I bought this book "How Britain Worked" for my husband for Christmas and he loved it. It is very informative and contains lots of interesting points about our past history in Britain. Its been well put together and its not in any way boring. My husband couldn't put it down. It's a hard backed book. (Guy Martin pictured on the front cover is also a motor bike racer as well as a lorry mechanic!)

informative and informal
Brought this to read on a holiday in Derbyshire where we visited many industrial heritage sights and this helped bring the past to life. Occasionally the repetition of chatty phrases like hard graft" can be annoying but I read this book from cover to cover in a few nights and I will dip back into it again.

An enjoyable read, but not without its errors - Page 16 gets off on the wrong track with an illustration ofGoldsworthy Gurney's Steam Carriage, but captioned, Trevithcik's - Puffing Devil. The publisher/producerhas obviousely little appreciation of both Cornish Engineers to get it so wrong !
