Exceptional small wire gauge butt connectors
Color: 20# Butt Connectors(100Sets)This set of butt connectors is designed for wires in the AWG 26 – 20 range, which is just what I was looking for. As a retired electronics technician with 25 years of professional experience and an additional 30+ years as a “hobbyist,” I have some insights to share on the design of these connectors.I first encountered the ‘thick wall’ butt splice design in the 1960’s or early ‘70’s. Western Electric (the R&D and manufacturing company of the Bell Telephone Companies) used this design for cable splicing as it was not bulky and produced a solid connection with excellent longevity. JReady’s addition of tin plating on all of the solid copper tube reduces oxidation and corrosion on the copper surface of the crimp connector, and is an improvement over the WE design. Like the WE design, the connector must be crimped uncovered to effectively crimp the thicker wall of the connector. The combination of bare crimping and the tin plating produces a solid electrical connection that is less prone to oxidation, while the thick wall is less prone to fatigue and loosening. The inclusion of the dual wall heat shrink tube seals the connection from moisture and oxygen, further protecting the connection’s integrity. These are high quality crimp connectors. The only thing I found disappointing was that JReady didn’t offer a kit that included the crimp dies that are designed for these splices. Not having the proper set of dies, I found that the dies for crimping ferrules worked well. The pictures below show a 20 AWG wire connected to a 28 AWG wire. The 28 AWG was used as I couldn’t locate a stranded 26 AWG to test. Heat shrinking the outer tube required a reduced aperture heat gun as the insulation on the 28 AWG is exceedingly thin and melts easily so I needed a narrow stream of air. Resistance through the connector is less than .1 ohm as measured on my Fluke meter – the minimum reading the meter is capable of.

Game changing
I've never had these, where the heat-shrink sleeve and the metal core are separate. It took a couple of tries to figure out which crimper to use, but the end result was very nice, and there was no risk of damaging the insulating sleeve during crimping. I also found that once I figured out the right crimpers, I got perfect crimps every single time - they are much more reliable. I'm impressed - they are quite expensive, relative to the more typical heat-shrink butt connectors, but they seem to be well worth it. There's little doubt I'll start buying these from now on, the only question is whether I exhaust my considerable inventory of the other type …

Very secure
The butt connectors work well and create a solid connection when crimped. The heat shrink is very impressive and bonds with the insulation on the wire extremely well. A nice indicator is that the adhesive becomes transparent when heated to a high enough temperature. Once it cools down, the heat shrink forms a water tight seal that grips the wire tightly.
