Why did I buy this product?Here's the situation.My wife and I like to lay in bed at night and watch Netflix on our iPad. The problem is, with young kids sleeping nearby, we can't play the audio at a descent volume directly from the device without risk of waking them (and we can't have that).So, what we would do is end up inserting my headphones into the single audio jack and each share an ear piece. One could say the experience created an intimate environment, but we're parents talking Netflix here. We needed a better way to enjoy shows together, while both experiencing superior private surround sound comfort for our auditory senses.Hence, the light bulb in my head that goes off: "Hey, maybe there is a headphone splitter."Eureka! There is! Immediately, I ordered this item. I plugged it in, connected two separate headphones, and voila! It worked like a charm. We now can enjoy the same show from ear to ear at an audio level that each desires. It worked perfectly.We have been using for over 4 months now and still working great. I highly recommend. "Independent Volume Control" unfortunately means only that it has two volume controls. Adjusting the volume on one output affects the volume on the other output, so I would not call that truly independent.The cause for this interaction is that the load on the sound source changes as you adjust the volume controls, ranging from about 10,000 ohms to less than 10 ohms (with no headphones plugged in); this causes a noticeable change in the output voltage of the sound source. True independent volume control would require an L-pad control, which provides a constant load to the sound source. It is clear that this splitter uses simple potentiometers with the sound source connected to the slider. The volume control does have a switch which disconnects the potentiometer from the sound source when that control is turned all the way down.Bottom line - I suspect all splitters in this price range have a similar design and this splitter will work fine for you if you label the two outputs and set it once to provide a relative volume level between the two headphone. However, if you need to frequently change the volume by more than a small amount you may not be happy with the interaction. This works great! I needed a little more volume for a movie file that was converted with lower volume & this helped a lot. We used on plane & volume was loud enough to hear over plane noise. Nice to have 2 separate volume controls too so that I can adjust my son's volume to a lower level than I would use. Would highly recommend!

This is a good quality item. We bought it for a specific purpose: listening to Rick Steves audio guides of Italy. As you can imagine, moving through crowds with two cords connected to a smart phone carries strangulation and decapitation risks (just joking), but the product does its job, and the dual volume controls are very handy.

I tried plugging several different kinds of regular headphones into this splitter. With regular apple ear pods, I could get the plug 3/4 of the way in and then it would get stuck. I had to apply a fair amount of force the rest of the way in. Once it was all the way plugged in, then only the music background would play - none of which dialogue.With Bose headphones plugged in, I could get the plug all the way in without forcing it, but the slightest movement to it would make the audio jump between just music, to just dialogue, to both, to neither, etc.Overall the sound quality is pretty degraded as well.

Worked great for a few hours then one side stopped working. Now the kids lost it so I can't return it. :-/

I ordered this headphone jack splitter for a 24 hour trip I took with my brother by train. We wanted to be able to watch movies and share music, but didn't want to have to share a set of headphones. I looked at quite a few others and settled on this one based on price and reviews. We were both very happy with my decision. Another thing that we both loved was being able to set the volume to our individual preferences. I would recommend this item.

Great headphone splitter that works. I used this on a plane and the volume was loud enough to hear over the plane noise. Used it on my iPhone and iPad both worked and gave control to two headphones with volume control. Great item for the price.
