I've never had an issue with Starrett. That said I think this unit snuck by quality control. The pivot arm attachment does not hold the indicator tight enough. I belive the issue is the small detent is not machines deep enough to allow the thumb screw to make contact until it reaches the indicator. This is probably a one off so I'll exchange this for another one and review again later.

This indicator is extremely useful for general purposes in a machine shop such as, tramming milling machine heads, vises, centering parts on a four jaw chuck, centering tailstocks, and with appropriate accessory, it can locate holes and do other internal gauging. Although it is graduated in .001", you can be more accurate than that with the indicator, since most of the time you will be indicating so that the needle does not move at all, not just that it moves less than one graduation. If I had tried this indicator out before buying other kinds, I would probably have not bought as many indicators as I have, it fills a lot of roles, and covers a good deal of the indicating requirements in a machine shop. It's also extremely rugged, easy to use, and accurate.

Aside from the inherent design perfection of this back plunger style dial indicator with its accessories (the kit 196A5Z), the workmanship, fit and finish of this little indicator are flawless. Anyone who has fiddled with a cheap dial indicator's too tight bezel and jumpy tip or plunger knows how a simple indicating task can turn into a pesky, time consuming exercise in frustration. None of that here! Well worth the money. You can't go wrong with this Starrett.

Tech broke one of the two in my alignment kit. Quicker to get from Amazon than other sources. Oftentimes delivery time beats price.
