Why doesn't Apple colors on their keyboard backlights?
For $179, I expected this keyboard to be more similar to the built in keyboard on a Mac - after all that's what I was trying to re-create for my desktop. The Good - The build quality is great! The backlighting is even, but not very bright on the highest setting. I was disappointed that there is no way to control the lighting via software, and the lighting is always one color (no zones). The compatibility with windows isn't great either, no way to use the function keys as hotkeys without additional remapping software. Finally, the CAPS lock light is extremely dim and there are no NUM or SCROLL lock lights. It's not all bad though, the chiqlet keys are nice (if you're into that kind of thing) and the USB port is convenient.

I have a complicated relationship with this keyboard
Overall, I would say I am not happy with this keyboard. Let me start off with the positive: * Aesthetics - It looks amazing and appears like something that would come with the computer * Layout - It has a true Mac layout. I'm a stickler when it comes to the numpad layout and hate PC keyboard with huge plus keys. * USB Hub - I was surprised to find a functioning USB port on the underside of the keyboard that I plugged my Logitech receiver into. Really nice! * Backlight - It's gimmicky, but really cool at the same time And the negative: * Won't work for startup options on a Mac (like using the option key to select startup disk, or clearing PR-ram) * Key's have a really weird feel. I've had this for months, and there are multiple keys that I end up double tapping or not tapping at all. I'm not sure if it's a weird amount of tension, or if the key's tension are not uniform. Overall, since typing is less than stellar and it's rather expensive, I can't recommend this product even though it looks amazing. I'm contemplating replacing it even though it has been durable and aesthetically matches my machine just perfectly.

This keyboard is the worst Matias has ever made
I used a Matias mechanical keyboard for my Mac for many years. When my original Apple keyboard bit the dust, I wanted a keyboard with a solid metal top and great key feel like my Apple keyboard but I also wanted backlighting for the keys that makes it easier to work with in the dark. When I saw that Matias made a full-size keyboard with a number pad that also had backlighting, I was excited. The Matias mechanical keyboard I used for years was wonderful. I saw some reviews mentioning that this was a poor keyboard, but I assumed some people just didn't like the action on the keys. My mistake. The metal top is solid and feels similar to the Apple keyboard it replaced. The key spacing and layout is pretty good but these are the best. things I can say about this keyboard. The backlighting isn't as bright as on most backlit keyboards or Apple's laptops. The keys themselves feel mushy and imprecise. I very frequently get two of the same character when I only type one. To make things worse, sometimes pressing a key returns no output at all. It's a keyboard. It's one job above all else is to reliably output the things you type and it fails at that miserably. This is not an inexpensive keyboard, so there is no excuse for it to be so bad. I'm returning it. With my next keyboard I won't have to worry about whether it will work properly or not. If you are looking to buy this keyboard because it's one of the few backlit metal keyboards for the Mac, you should reconsider until Matias goes back to the drawing board and produces a reliable version of this keyboard.

So close to perfect
This is the only full-size, RGB variable-intensity backlit, Space Gray, USB wired, aluminum frame, Mac keyboard available on the market today. It looks like the brother of the now discontinued Apple keyboard although its over-all quality is not quite as refined as the Apple product (few things are - truth be known). The key feel is great. Some people report that they seem "looser" than the old Apple product but I don't notice it as a distractor. The RGB works good and is variable with a potentiometer type control. Intensity level is 10 levels from dim to bright. There is some leakage around the bottom of the keys but not distractingly so to me. I love the USB wired connection. No drop-outs or lags with this connection. A built-in USB connector on the keyboard gives me a handy place to plug in my trackball - saving a valuable USB plug slot on my outboard MBP dongle adapter. The keyboard remains lit when the MPB is turned off. That is probably because the Satechi external adapter I use with the MBP provides continuous charging through the USB ports. Point is, if this is set up in your bedroom, you can expect a "nightlight." Color match is good between the MBP, Satechi external adapter and the keyboard. Not perfect, but better than a silver adapter, white keyboard and space gray laptop. Almost perfect...what's the bitch? A minor lapse in quality control resulted in the "caps lock" key having a partially delaminated key top on the lower left corner of the key. Every now and then my finger brushes across that corner of the key and it "snags" a little bit - enough to be distracting. For $100.00, the QC should have picked this up during inspection! Too bad a minor flaw mars what is an almost perfect product.

well constructed keyboard but serious flaws in my unit
I really like this keyboard. The backlighting is awesome and the key feel and look are perfect for me. Unfortunately in my unit I have doubled key presses way to often and after one too many typing mistake I'm replacing this keyboard with a genuine Apple unit.

I bought this keyboard thinking the first one I bought was broken and was sent back. Then the second one had the exact same issue. Sometimes when I type the key would repeat the same letter/number. regardless the key or number. I would always end up going back and correcting the word and this would happen every 5-6 word. Also the top keys just suddenly stopped working. Now I can't use the volume button, backlight and F3 key. At this point its pretty much trash since it has already passed its warranty period.

After reading a number of less than stellar reviews for this product, I was a bit hesitant to lay down approx. $150 for it. However, seeing that I'd purchased over 50 of the non-backlit white Matias keyboards for the office (to replace the no longer available Apple keyboards), and they'd been perfectly fine, I decided to take the leap. Upon arrival, I immediately checked every key to make sure they were working correctly... so far so good. The backlight isn't quite perfectly even, and if you look at an angle, you can see the lights underneath, but overall I'm happy with the backlight implementation. The key feel is soft, but tactile enough, I like using it, possibly moreso than the scissor-key BT keyboard it replaced. I really like this keyboard a lot. Do I think it's as good as an Apple keyboard? Not quite. Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

I really, really wanted to like this keyboard - so much so that I bought it twice because I thought the first one was defective. It is very sleek-looking, appears well-made, and the backlight is great if you work in a darkened space sometimes. But - and maybe it's just the way I type - certain keys randomly repeat when I use them, so the word "which" would regularly be translated to"wwhich", "sometimes" = "someetimes", etc etc. I couldn't type more than a sentence without one or more doubling of characters. I have to say that Matias technical support were brilliant - they refunded the cost of the first keyboard after I had struggled with it for a few months. I bought another one from Amazon immediately, thinking I had just gotten a faulty unit. Sadly, the same behaviour, so it's gone back. I am now using a 14 year old Apple wired keyboard and am having zero problems. I suspect that the Matias mechanism just does not suit my typing style.
