how large are the hip belt pockets? One reviewer found the hip belt unusable- I'd love to hear other opinions here, too.

There is only a pocket on one side, not both. It's small, but I love it. I can fit my iphone 5 SE and a tube of chapstick in for easy access.

Will this fit a 11.8” x 7” x 13.8” item inside?

Yes!!! I just got mine out and put a briefcase into it I measured the briefcase and an item measuring this will definitely fit in the largest compartment Which is closest to the body

Where do you open it to load the main compartment?

It has 3 compartments! Main, middle and little! Has 3 zippers! Get one!
