Absolutely worthless! -- and a complete waste of money, too
So I went out on a limb to give this a try, despite the overwhelming number of poor reviews. Well, the masses have it right. This product is a total piece of trash. In fact, that's where it ended up -- in the trash. I was so disgusted after 20 attempts to put a button on a shirt -- a shirt of very lightweight material, btw -- I didn't want to waste more of my time preparing to return it.I owned the REAL Original Buttoneer more than 10 years ago. After using all of the original fasteners, I tried ordering some replacements. Those were of inferior quality as well, and did not work at all. So I had a great tool, with no plastic fasteners. I finally decided to try this product. Big mistake! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider buying this product. IT DOES NOT WORK. And after doubting all of the bad reviews myself, I had to learn the hard way too. Anyone saying this product works is simply lying. I honestly don't believe you could attach a button to a piece of paper. I can't pinpoint the weak link. But the plastic fasteners themselves seem to be absolutely worthless. They bend, break or stretch every time.I just wish Amazon could intervene and refuse to allow the sale of products like this. Just look at the reviews. There's obviously a problem. Sure, I could have returned it. And I'm sure plenty of others have. But sellers have a responsibility too. And when they know a product is faulty, they shouldn't continue trying to sell it. But hey, it's all about the money, right? They couldn't care less if the product actually works as described. If you do decide to give this a try, good luck. Just don't forget you've been warned.

Buttoneer does work and it's fast and easy now that I know how!
Well when i originally tried this i thought what a piece of junk. It doesn't work and was going to send it back after trying several attempts. I decided to look for a video on the buttoneer on youtube. I watch video a couple times and now understand how to work this thing. I followed along and was able to successfully attach a button. YAY! The key to all this is to make sure the fasteners go all the way in and to pull the fabric taught and then push the plunger. Now its working great and fast. A lot better and faster than trying to sew this on.

Piece of worthless crap
If you want to attach a button, buy some thread and a needle. it only takes a few minutes. I bought this to put in a travel bag so I could quickly fix any loose button if one came off a shirt. However, after several tries with this, I thought I was doing something very wrong. I wasn't. This is useless. First, the instructions are poor. How much do I pull this thin piece of plastic? Does it matter whether the longer end goes in the top? The Plastic breaks often. Then I tried to push the needle through the shirt material. This is tough as the needles are thick, and if you push too much, the plunger plunges and you have to start over. After making sure the end was as tight as possible, I plunged the button on, and it promptly fell off. Even after attaching, it is held on by a thin plastic foot and falls off after use. I realized it was not effective nor a time saver. Just worthless. It also points out the problem Amazon has in that they sell everything so you never know what quality you are getting. Lesson learned. buy a needle!

Watch How-To Videos!
Once you figure it out, this is a pretty nifty tool. Suggest you find YouTube or other source How-To videos. You'll be glad you did!

Not like they used to be!!
The device is excellent. The fasteners are no longer durable. They are quite brittle and of much lower quality than the originals that I used for years. No longer worthwhile. No longer a bachelor's friend. Nothing but frustration. Find a different way. Let me know if you find a different supplier of compatible fasteners!! I would give five stars in the ease of use category if the fasteners still worked.
