A huge mass of new material on "2001"
I got this book yesterday, and I am seriously impressed. This is my favourite film, and I have CGI as my main hobby, I love working on craft from 2001, which should tell you where I am coming from! The paper is good quality, and the images are beautifully printed, and there are LOADS of them. I have plenty of books on 2001, and have scoured the web, but I would say at least 2/3rds of these are new to me, or in much higher quality than I had seen before. For me the most interesting sections covered the lost designs, there is a lot of content on alternative versions of The Discovery, Pods, Orbital Platforms and the Space Station. Lots of photos of sets showing views and angles that I had not seen before either, including things like the OUTSIDE of the Aries set, and how they got the Earth spinning in the background behind Heywood Floyd in the station. If you want new imagery, the book is pretty much essential. However, I really wish it had been printed at more normal proportions, rather than contrived to make the whole thing the same shape as a monolith. They get around many of the issues this causes by having lots, (and I do mean lots), of fold out pages. But it really would have been better to simply have a normal format.I considered giving 4* for that reason, but the content is so good I will forgive that. And considering the huge number of illustrations and print quality, it's a very fair price too.Highly recommended to fans of the film.

Amazing book, both in contents and in form
Amazing book, both in contents and in form. Although the 2OO1 afficionado will already know some of the points discussed in the book, there are still plenty of information gems in there, with lots of interviews with the cast and crew. The concept art and photographs are just breathaking! Don't be put off by the strange aspect-ratio of the book, or by the numerous fold-lines: it's 2OO1, and it really couldn't have taken another form. This is how it was meant to be enjoyed, and it's pure pleaure to see and handle this masterpiece of a book. My thanks go out to the team at Taschen for giving us this beautiful book.I should point out, though, that the first copy I got was missing some pages, probably due to a binding error, but Amazon quickly replaced it with a pristine volume.

Wonderful and frustrating
The book has a strange size and is filled with wonderful content - superb photographs. The downside is that the books size and shape makes handling a little awkward and some images harder to view.

As a 2001 fan I loved this book
As a 2001 fan I loved this book...but be careful how you handle it as it has a rather unusual construction. Why? No reason that I can see. Downside is spreads are over two pages and you loose some of the photospread in the gutter...but, hey, it’s brilliant!

Following master film maker filming the future.
As others have stated the content cannot be faulted, but the layout is a problem. It may have been a great idea in the design stage but the folded images are likely to be prone to damage as they are opened from a very tight fitting binding. The content is brilliant and takes Piers 1994 paperback 2001: Filming the Future to a new level - obviously they do share many of the same images - but the attention to detail is impressive. The one thing about Filming The Future is that it is in a more traditional format and as such much more accessible. If they came up with a more traditional layout I would buy it.

Something for fans of Stanleys sci fi movie
Honestly was not expecting too much from mainstream version of this book.Cannot say if there is anything missing from the limited edition. There's not a mass of books available about 2001,this is a welcome addition.Plenty of pictures, concept art, props i've not seen before.Unusual format of slip off sleeve and fold out horizontal foldout from vertical pages. The spines not attached tocentre of the book so it sits flat for reading. There is enough to read, rather than just a coffee table book to let your friends flick through. If you are a fan for this price you should buy it.I love it.

Thank you Taschen!
Thank you Taschen Publishing! An amazing tome, I am thoroughly impressed, by this important book. The book is shaped as the black monolith, this constrains the outlay of photographs inside, with many disappearing into the 'gutter'.However, this is the most impressive book, a perfect corresponding volume to the film. There is so much information, set-photos, drawings, etc. Oh, yes, the price is so reasonable too!!

Terrible design
While there is good content, due to the design of the book it's almost impossible to read.

A unique book
An outstanding book for any fan of the film with lots of background stories and photos from the sets. There are also concept drawings. The whole book is in the shape of a monolith with lots of fold out pages. While this gives the material a unique look and feel, in all practicality I find you must lay the book on table and work with it carefully in order to get through it.

Tolle Qualität. Unpraktisches Format. Kunst eben.
Tolles, kompromissloses Monolithformat.
