It's a shame because all 3 gigs were astonishing and captured the essence of Rory at his best.
The Hammersmith Odeon gigs lasted over two and a half hours. One was recorded for the BBC but (usual BBC) it was cut for tv broadcast and I believe this is the same version. It's a shame because all 3 gigs were astonishing and captured the essence of Rory at his best.t

Thanks to the Finns, Rory rocks Hammersmith Odeon once again !
Thanks to this Finnish edition of Rory's 'Sight and Sound in Concert' (minus the BBC's opening introduction and closing credits) we Rory fans can once again enjoy this 1977 performance from the classic band line-up of Rory, Gerry, Rod & Lou during their heyday.Despite the fact the sound quality on this version is slightly muffled and the DVD's inherent sound volume is rather low (compared to others), this is still a very worthwhile and enjoyable purchase. With the possible exception of Pistol Slapper Blues (where Rory's performance falls apart in places), this DVD showcases Rory on pretty good form. I'm glad that I bought it !The tracks on this compilation are:-Do You Read Me.Secret Agent.Calling Card.Bought And Sold.Western Plain.Pistol Slapper Blues.Too Much Alcohol.Going To My Hometown.Souped Up Ford.

Where was this gem hiding all these years?
I have to ask, where was this gem hiding since 1977? It appears to have been recorded for Dutch television, despite the venue, which is the Hammersmith-Odeon in London, England. It also seems clear that this DVD is what could be saved of Gallagher opening for another act. (I remember what it was like for bands to follow RG onto the stage. I mean Aerosmith and others having to hear chants of "Rory, Rory, Rory", during their first few numbers.)The film itself can be a bit grainy on the wide shots, but that also could be due to the size of my TV monitor. The sound is a bit muddy for about the first 30 seconds, but that clears up quickly. The DVD runs about an hour, give or take. I admit this was my favorite llineup in Rory's prime days. It includes Lou Martin on keyboards and Rod D'Ath on drums. Much later, when he did shows with Mark Feltham and Garrett Watkins - those were the best. This album contains stellar versions of every song on it. Everything sounds fresh and new, even though the acoustic section holds no surprises, with Rory playing "Western Plain" on his jumbo acoustic guitar, "Pistol Slapper Blues" and 'Too Much Alcohol" on national steel resonator guitar, and ending with "Going to My Home Town" on mandolin and bringing the rest of the band in for that piece. What stands out as special is nothing is rushed in these selections. Rory's fretwork and slide work are just stellar. His dexterity on the old resonator guitar is amazing. One can easily imagine him busking on a street corner in Dublin or London. His voice and playing are so very clear. The electric numbers are just that –– electric. He opens with "Do You Read Me," followed by "Secret Agent," "Calling Card" (maybe the best live version I have heard) "Bought and Sold" and after the acoustic interlude, "Souped Up Ford."What makes this DVD great is that the music sounds so fresh; Rory attacks each song with the sort of fury known only to him. Lou Martin gets plenty of time to show why Rory came to call him "Mr. Honky Tonk", excelling on both acoustic and electric piano and organ. The McAvoy/D'Ath rhythm section is so solid they let Rory and Lou fly. There is a beautiful call and response segment between Rory and Gerry during "Calling Card" that truly stands out as special.All-in-all, even though Rory fans have heard the songs before, they haven't heard them played liked this. This is a true gem from a dearly missed Master... Highest recommendation.
