Will this muffle a noisy child playing video games if I set it up behind him?

No it will not. This only helps with white noise and ambient sounds. It helps your microphone pick up voices and other sounds more clearly. I can hear myself typing on my computer and clicking my mouse while using this shield, but the quality of the clicking is very clear with no staticy white noise. So you would still have a noisy child in the background, it would just be more clear.

my shock mount don’t fit with the crossbar. Where are the rest of the pieces?

depending on what you purchased, you see what you get in the picture as for getting a shock mount attached, those shock mount should have the adapter because we include one in all aokeo branded shock mounts.

can you use this without a stand?

I have an extender microphone arm that is attached to my desk and this can wouldn't attach to it so I just had to lay it on the desk so it doesn't necessarily need to be attached to a stand. But other than that, I'm not sure what other use you could mean.
