Dog proof and fabulous!!!
Got a dog that will get into the trash? My husband passed away, and he was much adored by my two Australian shepherds. Because I lived in such a remote location, I took up temporary residence on my son's farm in an apartment. My housekeeper remained at my main residence for three months, and my dogs loved her as well. The move to the farm was traumatic for them. They'd lost Dad and their beloved friend who had loved them so well. They became very aggressive about acting out, chewing on woodwork, tearing open overnight bags, and strewing garbage all over the place. I have one incredibly clever Aussie who can open any door he sets his mind to open, sometimes even when they are locked with a drop-down bolt. If I left them alone for even thirty minutes, I came home to kitchen garbage strewn from one end of the house to another. To be fair, these dogs had never done things like this until grief assailed them. But I knew I needed something bulletproof for my kitchen garbage while they adjusted to a whole new world. I found this Simple Human trash can, with a lock-down lid. I figured my clever dog would figure it out. But when it arrived, I even needed a trial session to figure it out. Once I did, it was easy to unlock. Boy, did it ever take care of the strewn trash! My Simple Human trash can might have been knocked over and pushed into the living room when I came home, but not one trace of garbage was outside of it. All I had to do was put the garbage can back where it belonged. No mess on the floor, period, and the can has no sharp edges to damage anything when it's shoved by a doggie nose. I stayed home all year, even so, making my necessary trips to town as brief as possible. My dogs needed one person who didn't leave, and they got over their grief in time. They had done nothing naughty for months. But then my housekeeper, dearly loved, unexpectedly found another job that better suited her, and not that long after, I had a prescheduled trip abroad to see my son. I knew it would hit my dogs hard when I suddenly disappeared and left them with a new caregiver, even though it had been over a year. And, oh, yes, they were naughty while I was away. I'm sure they felt frantic. The last anchor in their lives had vanished, and I was gone for a month. They'd been so good for so long that I didn't think to tell the new caregiver about the lock on the garbage can lid. She endured daily trash attacks while I was gone. When I got home, she and I made a trip into town together and left the dogs alone. Before we left, I locked the lid of this trash can. When we got home, it was pushed into another room, and my clever dog had figured out kind-of, sort-of how the lock worked. But all his efforts went for naught. The trash can will forever bear the marks of his teeth gouging the plastic and metal near the locking mechanism, but the trash can prevailed. My evaluation of this trash can: It holds nearly as much as a wider and more space-stealing trash can. Regular tall kitchen garbage bags fit it nicely It rolls around easily for sink-side tossing when you are peeling and dicing. The lid stands up for that, making it easy. It wipes down easily on the outside to keep it looking great The foot pedal lift works great for easy opening of the lid It's very attractive, as trash cans go It is stable and doesn't tip over unless a big dog tackles it I think a Rottie or Pit Bull could manage, with enough time, to chew part of the lid off, but it would require some time, and for most dogs, it is impervious to teeth. (Mine will always bear barely noticeable scars, right around the slide lock because my dog is so smart, but the can still looks nice.) My ending recommendation is that I've never owned a better, dog-proof trash can. I love it so much I even got one for my son.

Very nice kitchen trash can
This is a very nice, basic kitchen trash can. It simply does its job and looks nice as well. I replaced a much more expensive stainless steel can that was hard to clean, dented easily and was broken. It uses a standard trash can bag. It has a nice soft close feature and the lid can be locked as you see fit. I didn’t base my review on this but the shipping container was very sturdy and the trash can arrived in perfect condition.

Space saving workhorse
Truth be told, what I truly desire in the deepest corner of my heart is SimpleHuman's stainless steel butterfly step trash can, but I just could not justify (to my bank account) spending $160 on a trash can. Alas, I went with the plastic slim step-child, and although it lacks the diva flair of the butterfly, it's a sturdy little workhorse that provides maximum capacity in a very slim size. I have a galley kitchen with a narrow floor to ceiling window at one end in lieu of a wall. It provides nice lighting but isn't a good place for the garbage can, so I needed something that can fit under a sink cabinet or sit against the end of the counters and still be narrow enough not to block the entry way too much. This garbage can fits the bill nicely. The stepping mechanism feels sturdy even when the can is empty, with no wobble to it, and the top stays open if you lift it up by hand to 90 degrees, which is nice when I'm dumping scraps off of the counter into the can. The mouth of it is fairly wide and square, so larger items are easily disposed (fits gallon milk containers easily). It shuts slowly and quietly, no splattering, and seals nicely. The wheels make it easy to move it around. Locking feature is a nice touch to deter small children and pets from getting into the trash. I use regular trash liners (Glad ForceFlex Tall Kitchen 13 Gallon Trash Bag with drawstrings) rather than the SimpleHuman specific ones, and the drawstring part stretches just enough to slip over the lip of the can and the bag fits very snugly around the rim so that you don't get debris accidentally falling outside of the trash bag. I imagine this little workhorse will remain in our kitchen for a long time, even if we move to a bigger place. Unless I win the lottery and can afford the stainless steel butterfly step can.

A nice trash can, but not as good as the 13 gallon semi-round
This is a pretty decent trash can! It's a bit on the expensive side, but Simplehuman seems to make really nice stuff that lasts a while. This one is definitely not as good as the 13 gallon semi-round one I have as my regular kitchen trash can, but it works as a recycling can. The metal foot pedal feels nice and sturdy, and the lock function works well. I do have a few gripes with it though. First, standard 13 gallon kitchen bags can only *sort of* work in this can. I assume it's so that you buy their proprietary bags, but absolutely no way am I paying the upcharge for their stupid special trash bags. Second, it tends to scoot around a lot. I keep it up against a wall, and using it with the foot pedal makes it scoot side to side a bit the more you use it. I assume it's because of the wheels on the back, but it's kind of annoying. Last, the lid feels a little flimsy and kinda flops around when you open the can. It seals and works with the slide lock, but it's not the same level of quality I'm used to from my bigger can. Overall, I'd only recommend this can if you need something that fits in a tight space. I was thinking it would work well as a secondary recycling can with the bigger one as my normal trash can, but I honestly should've just spent a bit extra and gotten the nicer one. For slim cans though, this is a pretty good one.

Perfect size
I think this is the best kitchen trash container I have ever had. The regular 13 gallon plastic trash bags fit nicely and tight enough that the bag will not slip off or fall inside. The soft close feature works great and the nice, slim line of this fits nicely in the area I need to place it. Overall - this is the best!

I never thought I would love a trash can
I never thought I would love a trash can, but sure enough I love this trash can! We actually use it for our recycling. We put a trash bag inside and are able to put our recycling in and because of the small footprint of the trash can, it just works like a dream. The lid just makes it so easy to put things inside. The trash can is sturdy, looks good and keeps things clean. It is easy to remove the bag once we fill it up with recycling and we just replace it. It also holds a decent amount of recycling so we aren’t having to replace the bag too often. It also keeps any smells from trying to entice our dogs. If you are looking for a trash can with a small footprint that is easy to use and keeps things clean, then you definitely want to buy this one.

Worked well for 8 years.
I’m very satisfied with this trash can. It is my second identical trash can. I purchased my first one in 2017. It was still working, but recently the lid started jamming maybe once in a week or two. We were just moving, and decided it’s time to buy new one. I think 8 years of working well is a pretty good run for the trash can, so I bought another identical one. I use it with 13 gal bags with a string and it fits great. It’s great capacity, when I had bigger trash cans ( 13 gal) the bag would sink to the bottom. It’s easy to use and I’m very happy they still make them.
