Informative with a practical skills DVD
Woodturning, A Craftman's Guide should probably be described as a guide to craftsmanship in woodturning and is a suitable and useful book for the beginner and those budding woodturners who want to perfect their craft. It is a fairly comprehensive guide to using the tools, stance at the lathe, or correct working position, basic rules for woodturning and methodology, plus three projects - bowl turning, spindle moulding and box making. It is supported by a DVD over over 2 hours that demonstrates the lessons in the book and the projects. I am relatively new to woodturning and found the book useful: you can watch the DVD in stages and it will return to where you left off. This is good as 2 or more hours, while instructive, can be difficult to assimilate and concentrate upon, since there is just so much information. This sounds a bit critical, but the DVD is well made and give me too much rather than not enough info anytime, so, all-in-all, this is a good purchase for anyone with a woodturning lather who wants to develop good practice and expertise. I think it is a good book to get and recommend it.

Super book & DVD for beginners.
Although being quite a handy DIY'er for many jobs and crafts, I have never tried wood turning before. Having bought this book and dvd it introduced me into this art with enough knowledge to get started safely. It is a brilliant book for teaching and showing the basics of wood turning, the do's and dont's and also provides a platform to move on to more advance turning projects. I refer to the book quite often with reference to using the correct Gouges, Beading and Parting tools for specific jobs and find the book is a wealth of knowledge to provide a beginner with confidence to get started.

not a ten minute gloss over but an in depth guide to all aspects of wood turning from setting up your machine to what finish is
This a very informitive book for the beginner or if you already have some turning experience, it covers all the basics and a bit more. The big plus with this book is the dvd that comes with it, not a ten minute gloss over but an in depth guide to all aspects of wood turning from setting up your machine to what finish is best for your work. It also teaches you what tools and why, how to grind and sharpen them, techniques for turning, buying hardwood blancs and so much more I highly recomend.

Wood turner
Good basic book and video, clear details and instructions great for a novice gives you all the information needed to get started. Though I would recommend a practical mini course with a professional wood turner before embarking on trying to implement what is in this book

I had to start somewhere
I had to start somewhere to find out how to turn wood after having a lathe as a present. I found this book very informative, for not only does it show you the basics of wood turning but it details the working of the lathe as well. The dvd is excellent. It shows all the techniques required but the brilliant part it shows the tools you will need and how to maintain and sharpen them.
