How to deal with the problem of the longer shaft
As several reviews note, the shaft of the knob is longer than it used to be, and longer than the picture seems to suggest, meaning that the knob is unsuitable for some older cookers. However, a solution that seems to work is to saw off about a centimetre of excess length with a hacksaw. The knob then engages with the metal part in the way it should.

It works
This replacement knob has a longer shaft than the original so it is necessary to remove the old knob together with the lower portion before fitting the new knob. Once fitted together with a greased up thrust bearing the pressure cooker lid can now be tightened and loosened more easily than before.
