Antiques Detective: Tips and tricks to make you the expert

I've not seen a book on antiques like this before, came across it by chance. It is very interesting and I will used when looking at antiques for myself.

a very good general guide to help spot the genuine antique at auctions. It in no way will make you an expert but will serve to point you in the right direction. There is a very good section on china markings which is something that we have not had a lot of experience in but due in part to the large number of them, the section on silver hallmarks is quite small and very limited ( I do note that Judith does have a separate book specialising in these). I would say that this is a worthwhile addition to the collectors library, especially for the beginner, as it will not bog you down in information. and you are able to become familiar with a specific field with some ease due to the clarity of text and multitude of photographic examples.

I bought this for my wife for Christmas. She loves routing around at carboots and wanted top learn a bit more. She has read this book from cover to cover and made notes in the little book she carries around with her from it.It is by no means comprehensive but covers the most likely items, marks and condition reports you are likely to find. There are many illustrations and instructions on how to read and find makers marks etc.This is a great book for beginners or the curious person who wants to find out the basics. For experienced antique hunters you probably know most of the content by now so it won't be much use to you.

I suppose you get what you pay for in this life but I would have liked all the pages to be present in it and I had to tape up a fair few that did not want to hang around. Additional note there is nothing wrong with the spine of the book contrary to description . I have taken a video of said damage to book and will add it to this when I can work out how to get it off my phone. Additional note 2. the video is available on request.

Bought this for the better half and he loves it. It does not go in to great detail about items but it gives you a good idea what they are worth. A good companion book for referencing, but if you need a vast amount of detail this isn't the book for you. Well presented, well thought out, well laid out, swift delivery and the boyfriend loves it .

I bought this for my Mum as one of her Christmas Presents and she thought it was great.Helps all those budding antiquer's look for those tell tale signs that could help you find that bargain at the car boot sale.The only problem now is so many people are antique hunting the odds of finding anything are remote.4 Stars.

Good addition to the book shelf, always good to be able to go back to this book if I purchase an antique from a charity shop or market.
