KBS Coatings DiamondFinish Clear Coat

I recently tried the KBS Coatings Diamond Finish Clear Coat on my car, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with the results. Good product but to thin for me!

I use it on tools and fishing lures I custom paint. If you don't use a tool, such as a hammer or pliers, down here in Florida, they rust in a hurry. I have wire brushed numerous tools to clean off the rust, then use KBS. it gives them a glassy sheen and protects from them rusting again. I also use it to clear coat custom painted fishing lures as it is waterproof and hard as a rock. Great stuff in my opinion.

KBS Diamond is a pretty well known name in the world of fishing lure painting. It's a fantastic waterproof topcoat sealant and has a fantastic transparency when cured fully. It's very glossy and shiny without looking "oily" like some top coats and a properly cured coat will be smooth to the touch without any rough texture or grit. The one drawback is that the can is VERY prone to drying the liquid out even if you try your best to seal it properly after every use. This results in about a month shelf life before it becomes a giant clear rubbery puck inside the can. As such, if you're going to buy this, consider it ESSENTIAL to have a sturdy airtight container to transfer it to, optimally one that is a dark light-absorbing color to preserve even longer. As long as you do that, this product will absolutely suit your needs.

I make fishing lures on my wood lathe. The final step is to give it a good clear coat. Trust me, I have used clear coat sprays for the coverage, ease of application, thickness and all the others to get the look I want. For some, they look good until a bass (with its rough inner mouth) twist and pulls. After a few of those catches, the coating is rubbed off, scratches and scars are abundant, and it gets frustrating. I talked to someone that uses this for his woodwork and gave it a chance. It was about $35 for a pint, so I thought it better work. I have a UV light to expedite the hardening, but did not use it for the three lures (pictures attached). Once they dried, I could not be more elated. No runs, no drips and a fantastically smooth coat. There is not any variance for color hues or airbrush results. This will be the only final coating I ever use and despite being a little more costly, it will save you in the long run because of how durable this is.

I was trying to decide between this product and Rust Bullet Clear Shot and can't remember why I chose KBS over Rust Bullet. Both products have a noxious chemical odor and require an incredible degree of ventilation during and after application but I have used Rust Bullet numerous times around the house and it stops off-gassing after about 8-10 hours if not sooner. Unless you can leave your home for a couple of days I would not recommend using KBS DiamondFinish on anything inside a house that people are living in. My family is extremely upset with me and I still have one more coat to apply! We all have headaches and sore throats due to the KBS fumes even with an extraction fan running around the clock and windows open for cross ventilation. I don't even know if this product will survive the test of time but simply the fumes alone and the fact that it should not be used for indoor projects are enough of a reason for me to give it a low rating. I would recommend Rust Bullet Clear Shot as an alternative. I painted an outdoor bench with Clear Shot and it's holding up exceptionally well and looks great. update: I reduced my rating to one star since the KBS coating I applied is still releasing noxious fumes four days after application! I have never used a product that smells this bad for such a long time. I decided to not use KBS for any additional coats and will switch to Rust Bullet clear shot instead. However, the length of time it is taking the KBS coating to fully cure and stop smelling is seriously impeding the progress of my project. final update: called KBS repeatedly about my issues with their product and everyone I spoke to at the company was extremely knowledgable and kind to me. I am still confused why the KBS coating took so long to cure and stop smelling. Supposedly it cures faster with high humidity and I was using it during a rainy period in damp/humid San Francisco, CA. In the end, in order to speed up the curing process, I had to open windows to the outside on rainy days to bring in damp air as well as run a fan blowing air over the stairs I was painting. Even with all of this - the KBS continued to smell for an entire nine days after initial application! After that I had to just move ahead with the work and prep and coat the KBS with Rust Bullet Clear Shot. I would never recommend a coating that takes so long to cure and smells so noxious. My project was held up for well over a week due to my decision to use KBS. I switched to Clear Shot and the noxious fumes were gone within 5-8 hours after application and my project is finally moving forward.

A neighbor asked me to repaint their large wooden yard pelican and I quickly agreed, to my regret, because I could not find a single exterior sealant that would keep him safe, but not show yellow over the pure white parts. We bought and tested several supposed "clear coats" on a white paint stick, before finally finding this. It worked beautifully! It is truly CRYSTAL CLEAR over white paint and, as I told them, I am confident they could float it in the ocean for hours without it coming to any harm now. He is indestructible! He will be safe in the rain! However, they loved the new finish so much that they won't put it outside, but keep it indoors. : -)

This is probably a very good product for someone who understands the limitations and the proper way to apply it. The good is it seems like a very durable coating that stays flexible after a full cure so it is very resistant to cracking. The bad was a HUGE turn off for me. Read on First of all I couldn't open the can. It was sealed shut and I had to destroy the lid to open it. Pic included was the beginning of the process, I actually had to rip the metal lid to get it open. The contents are water thin at first. I poured out a small amount to apply and sealed the rest in an argon bath from my TIG welder in a ziplock bag. The amount I doled out started to gel very quickly. I applied using a brush and the open time is realistically 5 minutes. After that you are brushing on jello. When applied with a brush you will end up with a thick plasticy looking coating that has significant runs and sags and is generally unattractive. It will also have blobs of semi-cured finish that will stand out like a sore thumb when cured. I am very unhappy with the application I have made but the saving grace of this review is that I think I applied it poorly. Hence the three stars rather than one. I think applied as a spray finish this would be a superior clear finish. It stays flexible even when fully cured and it is supremely clear. I applied it directly to bare steel and it adhered extremely well. If I use it again I will also purchase the 6400 Thinner and apply using an HVLP gun and I think I will be very happy with the result.
