Length is 12 inches or around 30 cm. The thickness or diameter is almost 3/4th of that of a standard pencil.

What is the diameter on this thermometer?

Approximately 3 mm. Same as most glass thermometers. Same size as what is in a beer brewing kit.

will this fit a 24 40 thermometer adapter?

Yes. The thermometers are approximately 6.5mm in diameter. The normal thermometer adapter has an opening in the center of 7mm, with an O-ring so that they will accommodate thermometers between 6-7mm. The center hole is the same whether it is a 14/20, 19/22 or a 24/40 adapter.
