Set it and Forget it.
With this little gizmo I can get my BBQ going for slow smoking and not have to worry about opening the BBQ to check the temperature. I simply pull the monitor from my pocket and get the thermo reading from anywhere in the yard that I am.I like it.

Not Sure Yet - Good Service from OS
Purchased on the recommendation of a friend who had good luck with his unit. Mine worked on the first meal but the probe was bad when it came time to use it again. OS agreed to send a replacement but cautioned: A. Don't touch the probe to the grill or anything really hot. B. Don't shut the cable in the grill cover because it will melt the wires where they touch the cover. C. Don't use it in the indoor oven. New probes are $10. They also recommended another model they sell. Assuming the new probe fixes it and I can figure out a way of using it with the grill cover closed, I will be OK. In the end, it looks like this product has a few drawbacks that OS didn't anticipate so if I were starting over, I would buy the more expensive model that solves the problems better. OS was good to deal with on the phone - which is a plus. My plan right now is to protect the cable and use it as I need to (Closed cover) and be careful not to touch the probe to the grill. That may mean cutting the probe cable and replacing it with Teflon insulated wire. My current (bad) probe is shorted so it may just be a wire problem. I may be able to salvage it as well.Update. Received an entire new setup today from OS. Seems to work OK. I never did get the first probe to work. Good Service but beware of the use restrictions.

Wireless BBQ Thermometer
Works very well to help make sure food is cooked well enough and/or not cooked too much. Alarms tell you when you are getting close to the target temperature. This is the second unit I have purchased. The first I use at my home, the second I got for my brother-in-law, but I have used it as much as he has. There are only two main drawbacks to the product. 1) The receiving unit can't go more than about 15 feet from the sending unit. The alarm is loud enough that this is not a significant issue when I am further away. 2) The unit has several meat settings, but is set for one temperature for poultry and pork. There are new minimum temperature rules for these that are now lower than allowed by this unit. However, using one of the beef settings overrides this. This is a very good product, and for the price, is the best I have been able to find.

Great concept with a terrible design
This is the strangest designed piece of equipment I have ever owned. Now here is the drill for turning this thing on.1. Remove belt clip on temperature monitor2. Remove the battery covers on both units.3. Turn both units on.4. Turn both units over so the back is facing up.5. Use a bent paper clip (I am not making this up) to hit the tiny reset buttons which are located under the battery cover on each unit.6. Replace battery covers on each unit7. Wait for units to sync up.8. Replace belt clip on the temperature monitorOK, I'll admit I just could not believe this is how this unit is meant to operate (why not put finger sized reset buttons on the outside of the units or maybe incorporate the reset function into the "on" buttons?) so I called Oregon Scientific and they confirmed that it is supposed to operate the way I listed it above. So if you buy this thing, keep your bent paper clip handy. Crazier yet, the temperature probe (pointy object, an obvious way to push the reset buttons) is not quite pointy enough to use on the temperature monitor unit. The reset button is recessed and the probe will not reach it.Terrible design! No wonder it is inexpensive. An update. It finally started to sync up by itself when you turn it on. Pretty weird, if you ask me since it didn't initially.Another update: Now it doesn't sync no matter what I do. Junk, it is going back.

Good Customer Service Bad components
So I bought this in December and I used it 3 times and it worked great. Then on the fourth use it started showing that the temperature was about 40F degrees higher then it really was. I contacted the Seller and they told me that my one month return policy with them had expired but the manufacture Oregon Scientific would handle the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) and provided me with their contact information. I contacted them via phone, spoke to them and they then emailed me a reset process to try first. So I did that and it didn't solve the issue. After contacting them again now by email and telling them that the reset failed they then sent me a email with instructions to either fax them a receipt or take a picture of the unit and email them the picture. I opted for the picture/email option. After doing that they very quickly replaced the unit. During this time however I needed a digital thermometer so I purchased the Weber model from Lowes. I have to say its about double the price but the features of it are far better. If I had to do it again I would of just bought the "Weber" unit to start with. If Oregon Scientific offers a custom temp/alarm setting as the Weber does it would be a far more useful product. If I were them I would do better Quality control testing and possible have the manufacturing moved to another country.
