If you can stretch your budget, you wont regret it!
We only wish we had bought one years ago. Combine this with the SSD cache storage and the huge RAM upgrade, and it's incredibly responsive—instantly responsive. The operating system on this is fantastic, too.My only pain point is that I wish it had a screen to show system temperature, IP address, etc.We went from a QNAP to a Western Digital (Huge mistake) and now to this, and for performance, this is even better than the QNAP NAS we had. But, it is painfully expensive. So that performance does come at an extraordinary cost. Its incredibly quiet too.Upgrading the RAM also required no tools; it just slots right into the side panel from the inside.

Great synology box
Not my first synology but is a good improvement over older ones I’ve had. Very happy with it and the minor improvements over the years.Synology has been a really stable useful setup for me for 15 years and so this is more of the same for me. Wouldn’t pick another NAS box

DS1522+ (enclosure only)
The media could not be loaded. This is not my 1st Synology NAS, however it's my 1st 5bay, 5x3.5 HDDs / 2.5 HDDs or SSDs, it even come with 2 x Nvme. 2 slots on the underside, mainly for cache-ing data, but a storage pool can be created, now it's a 7 bay NAS.I've tried other brands but they don't have a User Interface as slick as Synology, and there package centre has what you want.Synology have been in the SOHO server businesses for 20 Yr +.Value for money if you want a reliable NAS that's so easy to use and add storage as you please. Also has a 10Gbs adapter port, and 2 x eSata ports that only work when connected to Synologys 5 bay expansion units (eSata is 6Gbps transfer speed.I would recommend most synology products to folk, whether newbies or codersRegards J. This is not a desk top.
Other than my router this is the center of my IT system. If you have a house or a business with multiple users, you should look at this. If you don't, its not even overkill. It's unnecessary. It is easy to install. It requires as much expertise as you want to learn in order to take advantage of all of its features. I use it as storeage/back up for all of my devices. It holds all of my audio/video (takes up the bulk of the available space). I should use it for security/cctv, but I've not gotten around to it.Cons: This is my second DS 5 bay. My old one stop working, because of a faulty transister (7 years old). Synology is not in the business of fixing old devices. A new board to replace a £1 part costs as much as a new device.

Phew - migration a doddle
Bought when my till-now, trusty DS415+ failed without warning. Fingers crossed all my data, photo collection over a lifetime is still in Secondary cloud backup but I didn't want to go there unless as a last resort. Checked Synology info on their website which hinted that simple removal of HDDs and place them in same order in new NAS of same family would recover the data. So after bit of deliberation, settled on the DS1522+ as it seemed bang up to date with features, all the performance I need and expansion capability there too. DS1522+ arrived next day, good old Amazon Prime, and transferring the 4 HDDs over was simplicity itself with the toolless plastic caddies. Switched unit on, connected via the NAS finder online tool and found all the login credentials had been transferred over with the HDDs so logged in and pressed "OK" to the question of did I want to migrate/retain my data. Next thing ... NAS there accessible with all my data intact just as normal. Brilliant!

It works very well
I bought this to replace my DS918+ that failed after 4 years (3 year standard warranty). I figured I'd get the 5 bay rather than 4 bay to allow for future expansion. As my hard drives were intact I simply transferred them into the 1522+ and I didn't even have to change the disk trays, they slotted right into place. When I turned on the 1522+ it offered me the option to migrate my data and after some brief updates and a reboot my data was restored. Even my shortcuts from my browser to the synology DSM screen and in explorer to allow me to click and drag files just worked.Overall migrating was painless. I will, however, be paying synology for the extended warranty because these devices can't be repaired unless it's just the power supply that fails and once you've created your storage pool you're locked into synology DSM forever.

Great decision by me to buy one
upgraded from a Synology DS211J 2 bay NAS.Just moved the existing 2 drives (SHR) and put into the 1522+ in bays 1 and 2 turned on and all OK,also added 3 new 8Tb drives at the same time.(btrfs and basic )All OK no hassle, no dramatics ,and virtually no input from me .It was also very quick ie 15 minsI can now see all my photos on all my TVs around the house and on all our phones very quickly.
