Disney & Pixar's Lightyear Review: Excellent - A great idea for a film. The Favourite film of a character in another film (Andy, in Toy Story) and the reason he gets the toy in the first place. A great take on the story and fun addition to the timeline. Nice that they didn't pander to audiences and made it different from Toy Story (as it should be) but adding to the whole ethos of the world it takes place in. Review: Blast from the past, modernised - Amazingly entertaining film, excellent animation and storyline, plenty of action and jokes for everyone - nothing to dislike!

To infinity and beyond
I’m always dubious when a central character of a successful franchise gets its own spin off movie. I feel like Disney are trying to cash in purely for financial reasons. However, this one works especially with the superior animation, the humour and the non stop action. A positive addition to my collection

Nowhere near Infinity
Here's a new movie from Pixar animation. Who brought you Toy Story. It features Buzz Lightyear! But it's not continuing on from any of the Toy Story movies. This is a movie all about him. And it's supposed to be a film from 1995. Which Andy saw at the time. And which made him want a Buzz toy. I don't think we called them action figures back then. Which is one way of explaining why he isn't voiced by Tim Allen. But by Chris Evans. You will have to get used to it. Animation is great. As ever. But...you know the one thing a good film needs? To sort out the script first. Polish it. Redraft it. Make it really great. Alas, this feels like it never got to the stage of a coherent and consistent final draft that everyone was happy with. We start with Buzz being a hero. No, he's being pompous and full of himself. So he's the subject of laughter. Then we get representation. Which is fine and dandy and not something that bothers me in the slightest. But it's not something that 1995 films went out of their way to do. And nobody used the word that way back then. So is this a 1995 film or isn't it? You can't have your cake and eat it. Then Buzz gets put into a situation where he's too stubborn to give up on a problem. Even though everyone else has. The best pixar movies should give you an emotional response, and it comes very close to it here. His single minded determination and drive is quite appealing, and it almost works as a film at these points. But then we have more comic relief. In the shape of a trio of characters none of whom are as funny as the writing and the actors think they are. Then the plot goes and twists, and nearly goes up it's own space time continuum in the process. Will Buzz get to save the day, be a hero and get to infinity and beyond? Will the last quarter of the film make much sense if you try to think about it? This just sparks into life occasionally as mentioned, but it's a very frustrating watch. It's trying too hard, and it really needs to just sort out what it wants to be. However: why did I buy it on dvd and give it three stars? Sox. Buzz's robot cat. He is awesome. A superb creation. One that cat lovers will get with. And he steals every scene he is in. Sox makes this film. In a fight between him and Baby Yoda for sheer cuteness appeal, it would be a close run thing. The loser being parents wallets. Sox is a complete success. And he's the thing you will come away from this film remembering the most. This is a disappointing effort. It's not terrible. But from a studio that are capable of much more, it's a bit of a letdown. Will it keep the kids quiet if you plonk them in front of it? I will leave the final word to a childish voice I heard from a back row at one point of the cinema screening I saw. They said out loud 'that isn't funny.' Out of the mouths of babes... Although as mentioned Sox is awesome. And there is a middle end credits scene, plus one right at the end. Both of those are pretty good and worth waiting for. Being a Disney DVD, it begins with ads you can either sit through or skip via the next button on the remote. You can then find them in the sneak peeks section of the dvd. Language and subtitle options: Languages: English, Italian, audio described English. Subtitles: English. And we get an extra for once also. A filmmaker's commentary.

No where in the description does it stay that this is an European DVD. Irish Film symbol dictates this. Very sad that we had to pay for a correct copy. Please, in the future state that it is a European DVD because it does not play on all American devices.
