Very smooth sounding white noise, great flexibility in volume levels, ease of use via iOS app
I'm the type of person who hates dead silence and needs a fan on constantly to be able to think and to sleep. I'd been relying on a pretty big Honeywell fan for years which is a pain to clean and to remember to turn off, plus it occupied a decent amount of space in my apartment bedroom and blew cold air on me.I've been following the Snooz white noise machine ever since it was announced on Kickstarter and was very pleased to see they adopted a much cleaner and more modern design. I ordered the "cloud" color and am very happy with it so far. Initially, I instinctively put it on its highest setting but have found over time that I can sleep with it on much lower settings. Some of the biggest pros over a standard fan are:1) Much more granular control of volume level and the type of sound (ranges from a standard "fan" sound to more of a "whoosh" like an air conditioner would produce)2) Small enough to sit on a night stand or dresser without taking up much space, and as said, the new design goes very well with home decor3) The ability to control the volume level, turn it on/off, and set a schedule via an iOS app. I cannot stress how convenient it is to be able to remotely turn the machine off before you go on the phone.I am giving this 5 stars because it met all my preconceived expectations, but there are some areas for improvement.1) The fabric "sleeved" section that you need to rotate to adjust the type of sound requires a lot of effort to turn. It should be rare that you'd need to adjust this, however, and the designers may have been concerned with making it too easy to accidentally change, especially if it was moving around in your luggage during travel. So I do understand to some extent why this may be intentional.2) The power cable is hardwired into the unit and cannot be removed. I wish it instead had a slim profile DC connector so you could remove it when traveling and also possibly to make it easier to move the unit between rooms without having to reach down to an outlet.3) While the iOS app works, there's a pretty long lag (3-5 seconds) before it will recognize the unit. It also doesn't support HomeKit as far as I am aware, so this requires yet another app on your phone to control.Overall, though, very happy with this product.

Sound is not totally smooth
Decent concept, but the bottom line is that the sound is not perfectly uniform. It's a bit buzzy, for lack of a better term. I prefer the deep drone of a larger fan or of brown noise coming from a good speaker, and this little rotor just cannot replicate. Prob. not a deal-breaker for some, but if you are in the market for a $80 white noise machine, you're probably pretty particular about sound quality. The plusses are that is is pretty loud and very light (good for travel). Besides the sound character, the cons include a very awkward and stiff twisting mechanism (to change the tone) and the added cost due to making this controllable via an app. There are three buttons: on/off, louder, softer. No need for an app whatsoever.FWIW, I recommend https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SMJQT4 with a towel on top of the speaker to create the best low-frequency sound masker. Too large for travel, but does a great job at home.

This is a white noise machine for $80
This is a white noise machine for $80. It makes white noise. You can make the volume louder. You can make the volume lower. You can turn the machine on and off. That's about it. It does not make any other sounds. Rotating it left and right makes different tones and it really doesn't matter. It looks pretty. And it's fun to use your phone to control it. But the bottom line is, this is a white noise machine. I remember buying a noise machine a few years back that had 12 sounds. That was half the price and looked just as pretty. The makers certainly had good intentions. However, in my opinion, it's way too expensive for simply making white noise. Funny side note: my wife asked me what other noises it makes. When I told her it only makes white noise, she then asked how much I paid for it. I said $80. She rolled her eyes and walked away. I have not talked to her since. We still sleep in the same bed and pass each other in the hallways and bathrooms, but we do not speak. It's getting awkward.

It's a winner
I've been using a Sound + Sleep noise machine for a number of years but it finally gave out. Well, it sill worked but I would get an intermittent "growl" interspersed with the white noise. When I started researching for a replacement (who knew there were so many sound machines?) it occurred to me that I only ever used the white noise setting and all of the other sounds annoy me more than help me. But, as I'm sure you've discovered, most come with the usual variety of rainstorms, city, etc. This noise machine is white noise, and white noise only. Perfect for me.The app is pretty basic and it connected to the Snooz without any difficulty. Since I have the Snooz right next to me I haven't been using the app very much but the app would be useful if it's on the other side of the room. I should point out that the Snooz is very attractive. All of the other machines I looked at, including my Sound + Sleep, scream out "I'm made from plastic!" look to them. The cloth around the Snooz classes it up a bit.I did compare the sound generated from the Snooz to my Sound + Sleep (when it wasn't growling) and the difference was noticeable. The Snooz sounded more natural which I guess it is because there's a fan making the noise instead of an electronic chip. Bear in mind, I was always happy with the Sound + Sleep's noise but thought I'd point it out.A negative on the Snooz is adjusting the tone. The instructions say to grasp the cloth covered area and turn it. Ha! It doesn't turn. Well, not at first. I emailed customer support and they were very helpful and admitted that was a problem they were working on. I appreciated their honesty. After placing it in my hand and holding the bottom plastic and then giving it a good nudge it broke loose and I was able to turn it and it works fine now.I'm still not certain the Snooz is worth the premium price over other machines. Let's face it, it's a new product and I have no idea how long it'll last but, based on sound, convenience, and looks - I think it's a winner.
