I am so amazed with this product
I have used Amazon for almost 10 years and I've never written a review because I'm just not the type to do so, nor do I have the time or energy to put in the effort. However, I am so amazed with this product, I have a burning desire to share my positive experience. First of all, I have tried EVERYTHING to help depression. Seriously. I've always experienced prescription drugs to be too much for my system no matter the dosing and the time I waiting the side effect out. With Sam-e, I started out taking 400s right as I woke up. (30 min before breakfast.) The first 5-6 days, I experienced heightened anxiety and insomnia. I remember one night just wide eyed thinking that it was ridiculous that I couldn't sleep. After about 5-6 days, I started to sleep normal again and the anxiety tapered off. Before I even realized it, I was just level. It's hard to explain. The edge was taken off. I've been really stressed out and depressed, and I'm in my second year of nursing school. Now, 2 months on Sam-e, the stress is minimal because I am able to control my perception on situations and life so much better. Control is something I've never had with my emotions or mental being. I've struggled with a little OCD, depression to where I wouldn't leave the house, sometimes not get out of bed and I would sit in my car for hours because I just felt like I couldn't move. I wouldn't even go into a grocery store because I didn't feel confident to deal with people or strangers. Sam-e has saved my life! That sounds so cliché but I am being as authentic as I can here. I don't feel like I'm on anything and I have zero side effects. I've not felt like I needed to adjust my dosing, as some people feel they need to bump up to higher doses to feel more of an affect. I did do a lot of research before taking Sam-e and I do take folic acid and a B complex. Apparently, those two supplements prevent a certain chemical from building up in your body from taking Sam-e. All in all, I am just so grateful to be one of the 5 star reviewers. I remember reading these same reviews praying that Sam-e would be a miracle for me and it is! My best advice is it doesn't hurt to try. Give it time.. If you feel the anxiety and insomnia, just hang in there. And take the folic acid and b complex with it; maybe that makes a difference. Wish you the best!

Better than an anti-depressant.
For years, I was placed on chemical anti-depressants that masked my symptoms, but gave me horrid side effects and no other benefits besides lifting my mood a bit. SAM-e is a naturally occurring compound. Many people that are diagnosed with depression simply do not produce enough SAM-e naturally (whether due to genetics, poor diet, etc...) and SAM-e is all they need to see relief. I threw my anti-depressants in the garbage one day and went through horrible withdrawals. I was having a lot of difficulty and needed something that could help. I scoured the internet for natural solutions and came upon this. Everywhere I looked, they said that Jarrow Formulas was the best quality available. Within a week of taking SAM-e, I could function. Things were looking up. I was me again. That was two summers ago and would not be without it since. Here's the kicker: I recently found out I have MTHFR which is (quoting from a site so that I can explain it properly) "a genetic mutation where homocysteine levels are too high in the brain due to the fact that not enough Methylfolate is available to convert the homocysteine into Methionine, SAMe and Glutathione. Methylfolate (L-MTHF or 5-MTHF) is like a wizard changing the bad guy (Homocysteine) into good guys (SAMe and Glutathione)." So it turns out I have a medical lack of SAM-e. Also, those with MTHFR can find themselves with high folate or high B12. i.e. the body will have problems converting inactive forms of folate and B12 (like those in normal multivitamins/enriched foods) to the active forms. So the inactive folate or B12 will simply build up in your serum, also inhibiting the active forms. Ultimately, this = vitamin b12 deficiency, because everything is inhibited. MTHFR is linked to Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Migraines, IBS, Depression, and Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's runs in my family. Recent studies have shown that "a line of evidence suggested abnormally low levels of endogenous SAM (S-Adenosyl methionine) may play an important role in the development of Alzheimer's disease, and that SAM may therefore have therapeutic potential in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease." Other research has said "this effect is likely due to vitamin B12 deficiencies, which result in neurologic defects due to the inability to conduct one carbon transfers (with folate) in the absence of B12." I also have IBS, and SAM-e seems to help incredibly. I notice if I forget a dose. I take for my mind, my mood, my brain, and hopefully protect myself from Alzheimer's if the studies I have quoted and researched for so long are true! I love Jarrow Formulas because this SAM-e is great quality and at a reasonable price. --Anyone that is sick often or has the symptoms of MTHFR, please look into it! A simple blood test shows it.

Never Disappointed -Buy Quality and Follow Directions
Ever since a vet recommended this product for a geriatric dog, I've used it for numerous elder dogs since then. It is also wonderful presurgery (check with your surgeon of course) and after any kind of stress or recovery. I was a Foster home for a breed rescue for many years and this is part of my arsenal to help dogs get part transition stress. To me, seeing the clear results in dogs negates any thought of a placebo effect. Plus, it's backed by enough peer reviewed studies that vets at least prescribe it with confidence. Not this brand, but I have taken care to ensure that the brand I use matches the $80(!) Prescription quality precisely. Narrow is the one I trust the most, but there are other brands which are also excellent. What you want is: Made in USA. Even from some of our friends I suspect the potency, and from China you may as well plant them in the ground like magic beans. No offense to individuals from China, but supplements sourced from those manufacturers are consistently lacking in actual active ingredient. :( Enteric coating. The active ingredient is absorbed in the colon, so must pass the stomach. It will also give you a massive belly ache! Blister packaging or some other way to seal the tablets individually. The active ingredient is highly volatile. It is sensitive to light, oxygen, heat, and moisture. Also, you want to avoid scratching or chipping the coating. The directions say take on an empty stomach and wait thirty minutes before food. The minute you wake up is the best time. Nothing should be down there triggering extra digestive action. All this is totally worth it. I have three dogs, one twelve, one thirteen, one eighteen. The twelve and thirteen year older still play Frisbee, I mean really play, like jumping and stuff. The eighteen years old still requires her daily walks and training time,or she gets into trouble, countersurfing or removing the kitchen trash from the LOCKED cabinet. The only other thing I do for them in terms of supplements is melatonin at night to ensure correct sleep patterns.

WARNING: More than half are old/oxidized
I’m disappointed with this purchase as more than half of the tablets appear to be oxidized. I’m near the end of the box and still finding brown tablets where there should be yellow. I noticed this when I received them, and just used the yellow tablets. For $55 they should all be fresh and usable. I keep my supplements in a dark, cool place and keep these sealed in their foil packet, so it isn’t anything that I did wrong.

Cannot recommend enough
Mental illness runs deep in my family and I've been on antidepressant medication for decades after struggling with mood since puberty. When my lovely, happy tween daughter suddenly took to her room crying unable to express the depth of despair that seemed to grab her out of nowhere, there are no words for how helpless and overwhelmed I felt. After taking her to a highly-recommended adolescent therapist, she agreed that she was likely experiencing more than just normal adolescent blues and expressed concerns about some of the dark thoughts she was starting to have. I know medication has saved my life and I was committed to doing whatever was indicated to treat her, including antidepressant medication. However, the therapist assured me that she was keeping a close eye on my daughter and felt I had some breathing room to try some supplements before starting medication. Again, I'm NOT anti-med, but the rapid brain development at her young age and some bothersome side effects prompted me to try supplements first. I researched and decided on either 5-HTP (+actually tested and used extensively in kids for other indications, -potential liver toxicity) vs. SamE (+proven efficacy and first line treatment for depression in Europe, no know SE's at any dose, -no clinical trials in kids). I decided on SamE and researched that Jarrow was a good brand for efficacy and purity. I expected a slight and gradual improvement in her mood after a few weeks. Two days at 200 mg- not much change, 2 days at 400 mg and she's markedly improved, then up to 600 mg and I could not believe what I was seeing. She was almost the same kid as before and other than a few blips (she is still a teen), she's been that way for a few months. So much so, it has me wondering if I should work with my dr. to get off cymbalta and onto SamE. A few points to consider- I'm a nurse and pretty knowledgeable about depression due to my own struggles, so I will try not to get too deep into the science but I've always suspected a genetic mutation (will test when I have $200 to spare) that causes poor methylation. Neurotransmitters like dopamine and seratonin require methylation to be available in the right amounts and there are some new treatments being researched and even sold that target methylation pathways. Sam-e targets methylation and I'd read that it helps it work better if you take a methylated folate supplement. Omega -3's, vitamin d, and Mg also have demonstrated effects on mood. So, I am also giving her a quality supplement that contains these too. We are also fortunate enough that we can pay to send her to a good behavioral therapist. I'm sure that those things are also helpful but the SamE is def. the thing that seemed to give her the immediate and noticeable boost in mood. The only negative is that it's expensive and, needless to say, insurance won't pay. But I'll take another job selling my plasma or driving for uber if I have to, because i think it's sparing my daughter the acute suffering that I've experienced first hand and seen claim the lives of people I love. FYI- I know this is a product review, not a self help article but I know ppl with depression will be reading this looking for hope. If this is you- do WHATEVER it takes (including prescribed meds or conventional treatments) to get help!

Mild improvement
I've heard great things about SAM-e that it more or less helps with most everything from mood to focus to detoxifying your liver. Although you take 1 a day, many have said you need to take 2 a day for it to be extra effective. 1 in the morning, then 1 in the afternoon. If that's the case, then this package is used up within 15 days. That means you're paying $40 a month. Therefore, this is overpriced for the average person. I wonder if it's that worth it. I've noticed 'mild' effects on mood with 1 a day, but when I take 2 a day I noticed that I'm much more upbeat than usual that feels nice. Unfortunately, I think this stuff is way overpriced to continue. Update: After using this for a year, 1 a day, I can't say that much of an improvement has happened with me. The reason is that I find I still reach for other 'mood enhancers' such as 'mood support' since this doesn't seem to be as effective as that. While as previously mentioned, some have suggested you have to take 2 a day, that ends up being way too pricey in the long term, not sure I will continue with this.

Helped lift me out of a constant misery
I absolutely refuse to use antidepressant pharmaceuticals since I realize first hand the danger of them. It's been 12 years since I SLOWLY took myself off of SSRI's and I have been searching for natural remedies ever since. Kratom has been an enormous help, and to a lesser extent St John's Wort (with high hyperforin), niacin, exercise, lithium orotate, ginseng, CBD, Phenibut (only for a very short time will this work)..the list goes on. Lately over the past few months it seems like I have an overbearing cloud of misery. No reason to be depressed, but just depressed. Those with depression will know what I mean. I remember a few years ago trying Sam-e, but for some reason it didn't work for me so I didn't bother anymore. Work was getting hard to even go to every day, and I had no motivation to do anything. Out of desperation I ordered a box of this stuff. I just picked Jarrow's randomly really. I had used their probiotics before and liked them, so why not. I feel I am immune from Placebo effect from experience, and am very pessimistic. I took 2 of these (800mg) and I am not kidding, by day 3 it was like I got a shot of adrenaline or something. It's been 3 weeks now, and I have not gotten that dark feeling of misery since then. I have accomplished something around the house almost every single day since then, which was unheard of in a very long time. It almost feels like a "physical" lift of some kind. Boundless energy almost. It's hard to describe, but something is definitely going on. You have nothing to lose here. I've heard that some people may not respond to these. I've read that undermethylated types of people respond well to Sam-e, while methylated folks not so well. I've read that it usually takes 2 weeks or more to feel effects of Sam-e, but it was approximately day 2 or 3 for me. I didn't want to believe it hit so fast, but expecting nothing for 2 weeks or more it definitely was not placebo.

Added Benefits
I actually bought this because I had heard it could help with my feeling a little depressed, but what I didn't realize is that it would really help with my arthritis knee pain. For me, it has been better than taking NSAIDS. I decided since it worked so well, I'd save some money and try a less expansive brand. That was a mistake. Not the same result at all. The knee pain came back again. So, I went back to Jarrow again. It is worth the extra money to be able to walk without terrible knee pain. Great product!
