It’s a winner
I cannot sit down and watch a movie for the life of me, they just don’t keep my attention (ADD). My 9 year old told me about this book “Holes” that they were reading in class and also watched the movie. He kept talking about it so I decided to buy it...it is actually a very good movie and I was surprised that I was able to sit for the whole thing! I highly recommend.

love this movie
starts off with a boy getting hit with popular sneakers and is charged with stealing the sneakers and sent to a juvenile criminal camp where they dig holes, but there are back flashes of another story of how the lake that used to be there dried up, it's a very good movie where they bring everything together in the and and the end is great :) a good family fun movie

Movie stays true to the book.
My fourth grade class and I read this book in the month of May, so we watched the movie in the last week of school. The movie follows the book close enough, and it was very well done. The kids enjoyed watching it and nothing important is left out from the plot.My biggest complaint is when Signourey Weaver's character calls the boys jacka****. To me this is not necessary, doesn't happen in the book, and for a PG movie should be left out. Also there is a crude joke about needing a microscope to see the body part of a male, and I doubt most of my students did not even get this joke, but truly unnecessary.

Great movie. Watch out for the lizards.
Wonderful movie. I thought that Eight and Six were a little young. My Gandkids watched this with their parents at my house, [an oldie to the kids, but definitely a goodie.]. I was delighted with how much they enjoyed it and understood it. They watched it again during their journey home. My six year oldGrandson made a dozen keychain lizards for his backpack for the first day of school. [funny kid]

Great movie adapted from the book!
My 11 year old son just read this book for a book report and when he finished I rewarded him by letting him watch the movie version. It didn't disappoint. This is a very well made movie. There is some light foul language ("Damned," "hell," "schmuck," and "jackasses" are all uttered), but nothing to be too concerned about. It is a Disney movie afterall! There is also some mild violence in the wild west flashbacks (a gun-toting female renegade kills men and then kisses their cheeks. Members of the old west community threaten to lynch an African-American man who loves a white woman -- he is shot as he tries to escape.) but these were events from the book and they were depicted well I thought since this is a part of history during that time period.

A Great Disney Film About Survival And Self-Discovery!
Holes is a 2003 Disney action-adventure-comedy family film directed by Andrew Davis(Above The Law) and is based on the classic award-winning novel written by Louis Sachar and has a excellent cast with Shia LaBeouf(Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen), Sigourney Weaver(Alien 3), Jon Voight(Varsity Blues), Henry Winker(Here Comes The Boom), the late Eartha Kitt(Kronk's New Groove), and NBA legend Rick Fox. In this film, Stanley Yelnats(LaBeouf) is sent to a juvie prison camp after being framed for theft. There, Stanley is befriended by a colourful group of inmates, and there he met Hector "Zero" Zeroni(Khaleo Thomas)and he tells Stanley of a story of a legendary gunslinger who hid a fortune somewhere in Texas back in the 1890's. But when Stanley and Zero learned that the warden and her guards are after the loot, the two heroes must stop them and return the treasure to the rightful owners. The special features includes a behind the scenes featurette, a music video performed by the "Inmates" of the camp. and deleted scenes, as well as sneak peeks of Disney DVd favourites like Ella Enchanted. Holes is the perfect Disney movie for anyone who loves action and laughs!

Sorry, I HATE this movie
All the time spent tormenting those poor kids. This movie feels kinda AWFUL to me ... sooo much of it is depressing and disturbing until you finally get to the end. Save your money!

Curse Shmurse
Disney's Holes, a faithful adaptation of Louis Sachar's teen novel, is a coming of age story of sorts. Stanley Yelnats IV is sent to Camp Greenlake after being falsely accused of stealing shoes, which seems to fit in snugly with his family's supposed curse. However, this "camp" isn't really a camp, but more like a prison, as Stanley meets the likes of Squid, Armpit, Magnet, Twitch, Barfbag, and Zero, all whom share the chore of digging holes, supposedly as a form of reforming themselves and "building character." He also meets the Warden (Sigourney Weaver) and "Mr. Sir" (John Voight), who keep the kids digging the holes for other reasons. This camp is no picnic, and as Stanley (aka Caveman) makes his adjustment to his new sentence, he seems to learn not only about himself and his family's past, but makes an important friendship with Zero. One of the film's main points was Stanley forming a friendship with Zero. Stanley, who is an outcast of sorts when he enters Camp Greenlake, helps Zero, who many believe to be stupid because he is illiterate, how to read. Stanley makes the most of a bad situation by gaining this friendship, and he learns that family curses are more myth than truth.Disney does a great job making this a great kid's film also, as many of the scenes that could have been objectionable were done with tact. Therefore, this is a "safe" film for kids to view. Overall, very impressed and glad that Disney brought this young adult novel to life on the big screen.

Excellent - every child/adult should own this
Having read the book and having given it a good review I was a bit apprehensive when I saw that this was a Disney production. However the reviews of the DVD were all good (and the DVD was very cheap). It follows the book almost exactly. I don't want to say too much here but the story relies on flashbacks and is brilliantly crafted. You soon realise that every little incident is there for a purpose.Disney have made an excellent job of what is quite a dark story. The casting is superb. The adults: Jon Voight as Mr Sir, Sigourney Weaver as the Warden and Patricia Arquette as the kissing outlaw are all perfect fits. The young actors all are wonderful with Shia LaBeouf as the backward Stanley outstanding. (Backward Stanley is an in joke - read the book or watch the film.)This is a book/film for 'younger readers' but being somewhat older (I've just had my Winter Fuel Allowance) I can recommend them both to anyone. The book will be re-read and re-read. This DVD will be re-watched and re-watched.

Great family film
Holes is a fabulous family film, suitable for ages 6+ with a great story. Anyone expecting the usual Disney offerings will be surprised and pleasantly so. The story is gritty, moving and an accurate adaptaion of the book. It follows the story of a boy convicted of stealing a pair of trainers and sentenced to dig holes with other delinquents in the desert. This seemingly pointless punishment is revealed as a ruse for the greedy perpetrators looking for some lost treasure. The story is enhanced by the developing relationsips between the characters and provides an exciting insight into how emotional bonds and behaviour influence lives.A truly gripping tale, well worth a watch.

Good adaptation
Bought this DVD to watch after reading the book with my daughter (aged 9). There are some significant differences from the book, but still a really good adaptation and great to watch. We have both watched it several times and still enjoy it.

Daughter loves this movie !!
Although I have never read the book I watched the movie years ago and never really thought much of it, so when a few weeks ago my daughter asked to watch it I decided to watch it with her.My daughter loved the movie and I enjoyed watching it again, I paid more attention to the characters from the past and present and the story line made more sense then the first time I watched it.Is it a movie that has a big impact? No !! .. But it is a fun movie that my 7 year old daughter loves to watch.

Great family film.
This film is absolutely fantastic. I purchased it after my daughter covered it in a school project. She really loves it and we all sat down and watched it together (myself and three kids under 12)as soon as we received it. Even my son enjoyed it. We love the part when Shia.... no cant say, you have to watch it for yourself. It is a PG rating so not recommended for the very young as there are a couple of parts I dont think the little one's would appreciate. Overall, this film is fantastic, has a few morals in it too. Bit of sadness, romance, a great laugh and plenty of action to keep you entertained all the way through. Great cast too!

Excellent, heart-warming, unpredictable!
What a great film, very close to the book, which is a definite plus in my eyes. My daughter read the book in school and was excited to see it on DVD. Once she had finished the book, she asked for the film and it was enjoyed, and continues to be enjoyed by the family over and over...You must pay attention or you will lose the flow of the story as it flits between the generations. Having said that, it is not a heavy-going film, and each time you watch it, somthing new will surface.

very good picture
Holes had a very good picture and hardly any adverts on it.I would definitely recommend it to a boy or girl in secondary school. But the best part about it was what it was for the price only £ 04.00

A must see for people who read the book @ school
I read the book Holes at school for GCSE, and recently purchased the 2003 DVD. It's genius because it starts off with Stanley and Zero being unaware they're connected but when Stanley has to carry Zero up God's thumb he unwittingly lifts the curse on his family! It's such justice as well that when the cruel warden sees her treasure box it's actually got Stanley Yelnats' name embossed on it and he claims what's his. For Stanley, ending up at Camp Green Lake was a blessing in disguise!
