Great product, would have been 5 stars except for TERRIBLE packaging...
Hi all, Let's get this straight first: I *LOVE* Hawai'i. From the hustle and bustle of O'ahu to the relatively busy Hilo on the Big Island, etc, there are still ample opportunities to find secluded areas on Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and Lana'i. I've visited the islands twice for vacation and would love nothing more than to live there one day. Yes, the cost of living is higher (relatively speaking) than in many parts of the continental US, but anyone who lives in Manhattan can also attest to very costly prices for even a postage-stamp size apartment. With that said, my favorite indulgences in Hawai'i has also been the simple pleasures: going to the beach and pool often enough but not so often I get sunburnt beyond recognition, doing other activities (e.g., rock climbing and canoeing), and then just relaxing to the sounds of the beach outside crashing again the sand. Hawaiian food and drink is diverse and I really enjoy it. I've warmed up a bit to seafood since visiting, but the tropical drinks, beverages, deserts, etc. are what can make or break a meal. I discovered POG (pineapple-orange-guava) juice during my first trip to Hawa'i and instantly fell in love. It's a juice drink, sure, but the flavors are exotic enough to be different but familiar enough to be thirst-quenching and almost universally available across the islands. This particular order was for 2 cases of POG (= a total of 48 11.5 oz. aluminum cans). While you can order directly from the manufacturer (Hawaiian Sun), their shipping costs are EXORBITANT. In other words, you may pay $15 for 24 cans of POG, but then get slammed with a $30 shipping and handling fee. Although POG is made in Hawai'i, I'm not going to pay a 100% surcharge for shipping. Anyway, I ordered 2 cases (total of 48 cans) last week and all arrived by the end of the week. However, I was astonished at the number of dented and dinged up cans. At least half of the cans had big dents in them -- overall, these are likely still okay to drink, but there is a very small chance some nasty bug could have gotten into one of the cracks in the can, leaving you with botulism or other food poisoning. The risk is SMALL, but I didn't want to chance it. The straw that really broke the camel's back for me was that one of the 48 cans shipped to me in 2 cases was OBVIOUSLY punctured and leaking BEFORE the cans were packed and shipped. Whomever packed that can into the shipping box actually put the can into a Ziploc bag and taped it shut. By the time this can reached me, obviously, it was empty and the can was packaged in a taped-shut Ziploc bag full of browish-colored fruit juice. Needless to say, I was easily given a replacement order (on its way to me now) for this damaged case, but the question still lingers in my mind -- who in the heck would put a leaking can of juice into a plastic bag and ship it out instead of throwing the can out on the spot and replacing it with a new and unbroken can. I'm really confused by this whole situation and sincerely hope that it doesn't happen again. As an aside, I haven't been discouraged by this single incident from ordering additional cans of Hawaiian Sun drinks from Amazon. I hope and most of me believes that this was an isolated fluke and shouldn't happen again, but only time will tell.
