Q: What is the *shortest* these can go? Need to be able to have them hang very close to the bar.

It depends on how you want to use them. There are carabiners and corresponding locations in the webbing to adjust the length. If you wrap the webbing around a few times (think layers of webbing) you could make them small, but they'd be bulky at the same time. It you are using handles or rings with the webbing that would not matter. They can still attach to a bar, but you'd be looping the webbing around the bar. Without readjusting mine, I'd estimate you could get the total length down to 10-12 inches per webbing strap easily, probably a little less.

Q: Can you use the strap with the Dragon Door Isochain (replace the chain with the strap)?

That is what I did. It looks exactly the same as the strap used on the newer model IsoMax.

Q: Is it safe to clip the carabiner directly to an anchor point rather that wrapping it over a bar and clipping on the strap?

I don’t see why not. The carabiners are pretty rugged and meant to last.
