Nice quality and solid wood
I have been improvising for a long time with various kitchen tools to try to pound my cabbage when making sauerkraut. This tool has made it so much easier.

I use it for refried beans
I use this to make refried beans. It is comfortable to hold and lightweight so I don't get fatigued mashing beans. (I use a mash and drag method.). It has sped up my refried bean making process! I can also see how you could use this as a giant muddler to crush mint leaves for a pitcher of mojitos.

Too small for husbands big hands.
It is easy to used but should be heavy to aid in crushing.

I like it a lot
I really like this pounder. Just the right size for quart jars of sauerkraut. 10 inch long. The rounded handle fits well in the hand. The box only says timber, but other amazon buyers and the seller confirmed that it's beechwood. The finish is a bit rough, but some smoothing with a scrap of fine emery paper will take care of it.Designed in NZ, made in China.

Good tool!
I make-and eat-5 quarts of homemade kraut a month. This pounder does great on mashing the cabbage to ferment, and on really filling a quart jar FULL. A must have for kraut aficinados. .
