Thought provoking and persuasive.
A very useful summary of over 2,000 years of “German” history. The distillation of which yields a persuasive thesis explaining that history - some of which previously seemed inexplicable to me, Wilhelm’s naval build-up for example. The one area I might fault is the explanation / description of the rise of virulent anti-semitism in Protestant “Elbia” - the author’s term for Germany east of the Elbe - before The Great War. It seemed like it did not adequately explain that very curious phenomenon.Still, very, very highly recommended.

Great read after my trip to Germany
Recently attended a German wedding in Hamburg and wanted to learn more about this country. I saw this book at the Hamburg airport. The author goes into the right depth to make this a very readable and informative book. Great maps and pics too. At the end, I was sorry it stopped in 2017 as I wanted it to continue to present day.

Explains the why of much of European history
Engagingly written with great perception and understanding of why Germany has been, and is, the way it was and is.
