I mean, you're hardly going to be reading this review if you've never read Invincible before. Why would you want to read a review of the 21st collection of a superhero collection with 114 previous issues? And if you have read Invincible, all previous 20 volumes of it, then you are mostly likely and as I did, have already ordered it pre-publication or just hadn't realised it was out yet. Maybe you are just curious about other peoples' opinions. I'll give you mine, if the rating hasn't already given that away, in a moment. Invincible is one of the best straight-forward super hero titles on the market. It may be THE best. There a neat little scene when our hero in his civilian guise goes to a comic shop for the first time in over a year and has a witty conversation with the guy behind the counter about how nothing really changes in the top two publishers but does in the Independents. They are really talking about Invincible the comic. In the 120 collected issues to date, Invincible has gone from a novice just discovering his powers to possibly the most powerful superhero in the world. But that is almost the least interesting thing about the comic. His relationships have changed drastically, many characters have died, the world has changed, wars have been fought, Invincible himself has been raped, often beaten, sometimes mutilated. The tone has changed from fun teen hero to dark and violent while still maintaining a consistent light art style which makes the dark things that happen actually worse yet still managing a sense of humour and the ability to surprise -like meeting his half-brother's girlfriend when he moves to another world and I'm not going to spoil that one. So: best traditional (sort of) super-hero title around from start to now.
