The best 9.7" e-reader in the market
This is the best 9.7" e-reader in the market so far. Boox is overall better than the discontinued Amazon Kindle DX, though its screen contrast is slightly inferior to that of Kindle DX. In the last few months, there are many software updates to Boox (to be downloaded from their site). Be aware that there are two models: N96 - with touch screen but without back light and N96ML - with back light but without touch screen. There is a third model N96CML - with back light and touch screen, but not sold on Amazon.com and I could not find any retailer in the US. I went with N96 as touch screen is important for me.It runs on Android 4 and comes with Wi Fi, bluetooth, an Internet browser and a notepad app for scribbling. The internet browser is usable. Notepad app is ok. File transfer with PC using bluetooth worked fine. The device also has lot of settings. You can download Android apps from Google Play. But all do not work. N96 is primarily is an e-reader and one should not expect it to use as an Android tablet. It really shines as an e-reader. PDF handling is excellent. Many zoom and pan options. Home page showing cover page previews of recently read books is helpful. Books can be stored in "Libraries" - somewhat like folders. Search, highlight, dictionary, annotations with export option - all work very well! I hope the company continues to support the Boox line of e-readers for a long time.

Easy to navigate and configure the display of the document
Have it for about four months already, Works for the purpose, i.e. reading technical Pdfs and books with tons of graphics and formulas. Easy to navigate and configure the display of the document, fast enough even with large files. It's nice to be able to download from playstore some other apps like a chess game or so.Battery life is pretty decent.Cons: The pen don't works that well when trying to write on a Pdf, the note app is very simple and not that practical as a modern tablet. The lack of back-lite is also bummer. The dual touch is sometimes slow and not sensitive enough (you have to get use to the amount of strength you have to apply to the screen), some apps works better with the pen others with the finger. Conclusion: If you want it for reading Pdfs and other formats with graphics and math formulas it achieves the purpose, it's very comfortable, i'm happy with it! To use the other extra features as a regular tablet, specially the note app it's very limited.update: Still happy with it, and still attach to my previous review. I have noticed that if you are using a cover case, not the original, and If it has magnets they will interfere with the response of the touch screen. Be aware of it.

mine is very very good! i love the size that read very easy from my thai book stores, google play... and some chinese book stores.the drawing part is nice. we can write memo or write some thing in the pages that allowed. and u can also send it out from the boox to your email.the stulus is very delicate. the memory is big enough to put more than 1000 book now. ( i got epub, and pdf ) it up on how big of the file of your book too. you also can play mp 3 on it, and the read oout loud for only some book but it is very very good for me ( who want to learn english ) ... it not read thai languages. you also can make it read slower or quicker too.i got it more than 3 months, read it everyday about 3 hours. i charge 2 times per week.so far, i love it!i have no luck with amazon book store for this onyx boox , i dont know why. it failed many time when i try to open. but google play book is working great!the seller is nice. shipping is safe and quick.

Slow and disappointing
This thing still runs Android 4 and there doesn't seem to be any update in sight. That limits the apps you can run, for example you're stuck on an ancient version of the kindle app.The screen is low resolution for e-ink; you can see pixels easily and the grayscale is lacking. Try any number of fonts and you'll find the line widths just seem wrong and the antialiasing doesn't really work well either. The GUI is hard to use because of the lag and because the grayscale conversion does generate enough contrast. Let me remind you again about the lag. It's not terribly cooperative about rooting. You'll have to go digging through dark corners of the net to find the right ancient version of towelroot. In conclusion, I regret buying it.

I can read pdfs at long last!
I read pdfs. I'm a mathematician so I often need to read papers and books that come in pdf form. I tried using the Kindle touch and Kindle DX and both were not good for reading pdfs at all. The touch is a lovely device for reading books, but the screen is too small. The screen on the Kindle DX is much larger, but it is very very very slow turning pages in pdf. I'm talking up to 5 seconds! Also the DX, unlike the kindle touch has no chapters for long pdfs.I decided to keep the touch for my purse, but when it comes to doing my main reading I use the BOOX. I could not be more happy. I can even add apps to it and it's wonderful to have the option of keeping extra books and music on an SD card.

Great for many different files and formats but the Kindle
The processor is fast and smooth. The graphic is also great with many different fonts to choose from. The build quality is excellent with aluminum back cover and solid. Overall is great price for such a large screen E-Reader money can buy. Rated 4 is because it looks awful on the Kindle application, but I don't really think is the unit problem.

Not worth the price
I must say that I'm really disappointed by this E Ink tablet. I purchased this model since it is using android and making possible to download apps. Sadly, most of the useful apps (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc) are "incompatible with this model", you simply can't download them. The tablet itself is often glitchy and need manual refreshing, when using the pen, it presses an icon when you are one inch away from the screen and taking a few minutes to connect to my WiFi (when every other tablets takes less than 10 seconds).Maybe the problem is with this model in particular or maybe the E Ink technology needs improvement but in every case, I can't say that this tablet is worth the price I paid for it nor I can recommend it. Maybe my review would have been different if I did not spend so much on this tablet.Pro:Good battery lifeThe reading interface let you easily change the font size or change pageCon:Stylus detection problemLong WiFi connection timeSome parts of the screen freeze and you need to refresh manuallyA lot of the applications on the Playstore are incompatible with this modelUser interface is not intuitive (some time there's the main interface icon, sometime it disappear and you need to use the on/off button)

Adequate device for reading pdf documents
I bought the Onyx Boox N96 being aware of the issues raised in previous reviews about the old Android OS. I found it adequate for the purpose I bought it, namely for reading pdf documents (research papers, thesis, reports and books). Observations:(1) I use ezPDF reader (which luckily is compatible with Android 4.0 and the speed is adequate) for the main reason that the annotations created using the built-in PDF reader (Neo Reader v2.0) do not seem compatible with the standard PDF annotations, so they are not visible when the file with the annotations is transferred to my Windows 10 laptop, even though ezPDF is slower than Neo Reader.(2) I bought the dual touch version because I need to be able to type annotation text. However this version lacks front (screen) light, which means that you need good external lighting to read, like with a paper book.(3) the connection to my laptop via USB works fine, with the Boox showing up as an external drive, allowing file transfers by drag-and-drop.(4) it is sufficiently light in terms of weight, for comfortable reading, while holding it up.(5) I did not find a way to view in landscape mode. The Android 4.0 version installed is quite minimal.(6) I did not find a way to set a password, and I am wary of entering my Google password on it, as it may provide access to my Google account if it gets stolen. So I prefer to use the USB connection with my laptop for file transfer, and I do not use any Google services (Google Drive, Calendar, email etc) on the eReader. The big plus with e-book technology is that you can still read in very bright light (e.g. summer sunshine). Battery life seems adequate, as it lasts at least a day of reading, which is good enough for me, as I can recharge overnight.

9.7 inch is the best size
Used for two days so far, my wife liked it, she used to have a 6-inch kindle, but frequent flicking through pages is really annoying, 9.7-inch boox n96 makes her easy to read. First day she read 4 hours, battery level dropped 10%, not bad.Con is no case comes with the ebook, I have to search and buy separately.

For the price this is very terrible, it lags and it's also supposedly run on android but every android app I downloaded, won't work with it! Not worth the money. The company seriously needs to do something about that!
